The armed forces lost 35 aircraft and 14 pilots in crashes since 2014. According to the data disclosed by the government in the Parliament, the forces have since 2011, lost as many as 70 aircraft including helicopters killing 80 personnel.

"Various preventive measures are being taken, including invigoration of the Aviation Safety Organisation, streamlining of the accident reporting procedure, analytical studies, and quality audits of the aircraft fleets to identify vulnerable areas to avoid accidents," minister of state for defense Subhash Bhamre said in a reply in Lok Sabha.

"Accident prevention programs have been given an added thrust to identify risk-prone or hazardous areas specific to the aircraft fleets and operational environment to ensure safe practices and procedures," he added.

It is also conducting analytical studies and quality audits of the aircraft fleets to identify vulnerable areas to avoid aircraft accidents, it said.

Technical error and human error are cited to be the prime reasons behind the mishaps.
