The increased cross-border shelling has resulted in heavy loss of life and property in the Indian border areas

A special police officer (SPO) was killed after he was fired upon by a group of suspected militants near Muran Chowk area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. This is the second such incident of the day where militants targeted policemen in south Kashmir.

"Slain SPO identified as Mohammad Ashraf was posted in Srinagar resident of Mouchpona village. He had gone to Pulwama for a funeral when Militants fired upon him from close range. He died at the hospital," said SSP Pulwama.

Sources said that Ashraf, a former militant was an SPO in Cargo, Srinagar and at present was residing at Chanapora in Srinagar.

Earlier in the morning, a police officer who was on traffic duty in Khanbal Chowk of Anantnag district south Kashmir was attacked by suspected militants. He was critically injured and underwent treatment at the district hospital. 

The day before yesterday militants attacked three places in south Kashmir, killing one and injuring two those attacks.
