NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to Imran Khan, the chairperson of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and congratulated him after his party emerged as the single largest in the recently conducted general elections.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that democracy will take deeper roots in Pakistan and also reiterated his vision of peace and development in the entire neighbourhood.

The PTI chief today announced that he will take oath as the prime minister of Pakistan on August 11.

Khan's PTI emerged as the single-largest party with 116 seats in the 272-seat National Assembly in the general elections held last week. Khan would be obliged to seek support from independent and religious parties to reach the figures of 137 seats, required to form a government.

Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti was one of the first political leaders from India to respond to the conversation between the two leaders.
