New Delhi: In a major boost to the Indian Navy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has cleared the procurement of four warships from Russia at a cost of over ₹15,000 crore.

Both the countries are scheduled to announce the deal during the New Delhi visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin starting today.

“The CCS headed by the Prime Minister has given its approval for the four warships for the Navy. Two would be built in a Russian Shipyard. Other two would be built in India,” sources told MyNation.

Two of the warships will be constructed at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. In India, the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will develop the warships.

As per the plan, Russia will take four years to deliver the two Krivak class frigates armed with BrahMos cruise missiles. The Goa Shipyard is expected to take six to seven years.

Sources said both the countries have been planning to build the warships and now are working on the terms and conditions of the program.

India and Russia have already decided to sign the Rs 35,000 crore deal for buying five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems, which is expected to be a game changer in the coming years.
