MALAPPURAM: One of the accused of 2104 Burdwan blast case in West Bengal was arrested from Edavanna in Malappuram district of Kerala on Wednesday night.

Abdul Matin, native of Assam, was arrested in a joint operation conducted by West Bengal police and Kerala police team led by district police chief of Malappuram Pratheesh Kumar.

Two people, both allegedly citizens of Bangladesh, were killed while manufacturing improvised explosive devices and another was injured in the blast. National Investigation Agency (NIA) had framed charges against 30 people in July 2016, in connection with the incident.

Police chief said that the Abdul Matin, was working as Imam of a local mosque in Edavanna near Manjeri and he was taken into custody from the border of Manjeri and Edavanna police station limits. “It was a joint operation that conducted by Kerala police and West Bengal police based on valid information regarding the presence of the accused in the locality and it was a coordinated effort that led to the custody of Abdul Matin from a house near mosque," said Pratheesh Kumar. West Bengal police team had arrived Malappuram as part of the investigation two days ago.

Malappuram police will investigate the role of local organisations and people here in providing shelter to a criminal who is accused of a major blast case. District police chief said that the arrest of Abdul Matin was second such incident in the district, referring the recent arrest of two Bengal natives from Kottakkal. It was on August 3, 2018 that a team of NIA had nabbed prime accused in a blast and IED planting case at Bodhgaya in Bihar on January, 20, 2018, from Kottakkal. The West Bengal natives Mustafizur Rahman and Abdul Karim, who also allegedly belong to Jama'at-ul-Mujahidheen Bangladhesh were posing as migrant labourers in Kottakkal. They were working with small industrial units in Kottakkal. “We are trying to find out the link of the arrested people with local people as similar incident occurred once again," said police chief.
