The Government Railway Police has issued a letter asking residents of Pathankot to stay vigilant after authorities received a threat letter by terrorists saying they would target the railway station

Pathankot: A high alert has been issued at two train stations in Pathankot after intelligence inputs were received about possible explosions being planned by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) has issued a letter asking residents in Pathankot to stay alert and vigilant after authorities received a threat letter by terrorists saying they would target the railway stations.

Officials have ordered to beef up security in the region and intensify inspections at the stations. The public has also been asked to inform authorities if they come across any suspicious substance lying unattended anywhere.

The Railways issued an advisory to the Pathankot Cantonment station and Pathankot Junction station on Sunday. The GRP has asked the staff at the stations to conduct detailed inspections in parking areas and places where people assemble.

They have also asked the railways employees to check unattended items of baggage lying in and around the two stations.

Reports suggested that the employees have also been asked not to park their vehicles in the parking areas or on railway station platforms where people generally park their bicycles.

The Pathankot Air Force station is around two kilometres from Pathankot Cantonment station, while the International Border lies 20 km from the railway station.

In January 2016, an Air Force station in Pathankot was attacked by heavily-armed Pakistan-based terrorists. Seven soldiers were martyred in the attack, while the six terrorists who mounted the attack were gunned down after four days of intense exchange of fire.

A high alert has been sounded at the stations on a day when Indian and Pakistani officials were meeting along the border in Punjab to deliberate on technical points for the Kartarpur Sahib corridor project.
