Pakistan claims Jadhav is a “serving commander of the Indian Navy and a spy who was arrested from Baluchistan and tried on charges of espionage”

After providing consular access to jailed Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav September 2, Pakistan has started the legal process to ''review and reconsider'' the death sentence awarded to him by a military court.

''Pakistan authorities are looking at the legal provision in the law to decide whether to go ahead with the case following International Court of Justice’ judgement”, said the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal in response to a question during his weekly briefing.

Pakistan granted consular access to Jadhav on September 2 after the International Court of Justice ruled and instructed Pakistan to do so.

Pakistan claims Jadhav is a “serving commander of the Indian Navy and a spy who was arrested from Baluchistan and tried on charges of espionage”. 

However, India maintains that Jadhav is “an innocent Indian national who was kidnapped from Iran”. 

In response to a question on the Indus Water Treaty, foreign affairs spokesperson said, “Pakistan has an exclusive right over three western rivers under the Indus Waters Treaty, any act to deviate or stop them will be considered as an act of aggression and Pakistan has the right to respond.”

The comment came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India would divert the river flow of the three rivers that fall under the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 between India and Pakistan.

On the recent visits of the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to Saudi Arabia and Iran in an attempt to defuse tensions in the Persian Gulf, the spokesperson said PM has stressed on the avoidance of a military conflict and constructive engagement of all parties. He added that Khan was ready to mediate and facilitate any talks between the two countries.

Confirming the postponement of the visit of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Faisal said that a new date will be announced very soon.

Erdogan was scheduled to visit Pakistan on October 23-24 for the annual high-level strategic dialogue between Pakistan and Turkey.

The visit now stands postponed due to the situation at the Turkey–Syria border.

On the matter of Kartarpur corridor, the Foreign Office said that the matter of the draft agreement is under process and they will update on the matter very soon.
