Relations between the two countries have been strained after Pulwama terror attack. Tensions escalated as IAF carried out airstrikes across the LOC at Balakot in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

On the very next day of IAF airstrikes, the Pakistani Air Force violated Indian airspace. Pakistani planes were intercepted by Indian fighter jets. During the aerial fight, Pakistan's F-16 fighter jet was shot down by the Indian forces while the IAF lost a MiG-21.
