India’s semiconductor manufacturing drive has reached a new milestone with two additional plants commencing commercial production — the CDIL Semiconductor ATMP Facility and the Suchi Semicon OSAT Facility.

With these units now operational, India’s total stands at five semiconductor plants producing chips, marking a decisive step in the country’s ambition to establish a robust domestic chip industry.

Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan confirmed that 2026 is a landmark year, as five semiconductor units are now in manufacture and production. He emphasised that the next phase, India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, will go beyond manufacturing capacity to build a broader ecosystem across the entire chip value chain.

This includes design, packaging, testing, materials, and supply chain integration, ensuring India develops end-to-end capabilities rather than relying solely on assembly.

The announcement coincides with SEMICON India 2026, being held at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Delhi from 17–19 September. The event has drawn unprecedented international participation, with over 600 companies and 40,000 delegates from 52 countries, including 300 overseas firms. This scale of engagement reflects growing global confidence in India as a future semiconductor manufacturing hub.

Krishnan noted that ISM 2.0 builds on the success of ISM 1.0, which demonstrated India’s ability to establish production-ready units. The second phase will focus on creating a sustainable ecosystem, ensuring India is not just a chip producer but a comprehensive player in the global semiconductor supply chain.

The theme of this year’s convention, “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”, underscores this holistic approach.

Prime Minister Modi has also highlighted that India’s chip story has moved “from files to factories,” signalling a shift from policy frameworks to tangible industrial output.

The presence of global CEOs, including Infineon’s announcement of a 28% workforce expansion in India, further illustrates the international industry’s recognition of India’s growing role.
