'India-UAE Ties Living Up To Promise of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership', Says Jaishankar During UAE Talks

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India and the United Arab Emirates are increasingly realising the full potential of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with bilateral relations continuing to deepen across economic, strategic and cultural domains.

Speaking during talks with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Mumbai, Jaishankar highlighted the remarkable progress achieved through more than a decade of sustained engagement between the two countries.

He noted that 2026 had witnessed an exceptionally high level of interaction between the leaderships of both nations, reflecting the importance both sides attach to their growing partnership.

According to Jaishankar, the relationship is continuing to advance despite global economic uncertainties and regional challenges, demonstrating the resilience of ties between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi.

Underscoring the economic dimension of the partnership, he stated that bilateral trade has crossed the $100 billion mark since the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), while two-way investments continue to expand steadily.

He said the growing volume of trade and investment reflects the confidence businesses in both countries have in each other's economies and the opportunities created by closer economic integration.

The minister also emphasised that cooperation in key sectors such as defence, energy and technology is acquiring an increasingly strategic character, strengthening the broader framework of bilateral engagement.

EAM Jaishankar further highlighted the importance of people-to-people links, noting that longstanding community connections continue to enrich both societies and reinforce the foundation of the partnership.

He added that cultural cooperation between the two countries is gaining momentum and contributing to stronger mutual understanding.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in Mumbai on Monday for an official visit to India and was received by Maharashtra Minister for Skill Development Mangalprabhat Lodha.

The Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as a reflection of the close and regular high-level exchanges between India and the UAE, expressing confidence that it would further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Jaishankar welcomed the UAE Deputy Prime Minister ahead of the discussions and conveyed optimism regarding the outcomes of the meeting.

The visit comes shortly after Jaishankar's official trip to the UAE from 14 to 16 October, during which he held extensive discussions with Emirati leaders on bilateral cooperation as well as regional developments, including the situation in the Gulf.

During that visit, the External Affairs Minister also participated in the Raisina Middle East Dialogue in Abu Dhabi, where deliberations focused on regional connectivity, geopolitical challenges and the importance of building resilient international partnerships.

The India-UAE relationship has expanded significantly in recent years following the entry into force of CEPA in 2022, with trade, investment, technology collaboration, energy security initiatives and strategic cooperation emerging as major pillars of engagement.

The UAE remains one of India's most important economic and strategic partners in West Asia, while the large Indian community in the Emirates continues to play a vital role in strengthening bilateral ties.

EAM Jaishankar Arrives In Abu Dhabi For Raisina Middle East Forum And India-UAE Strategic Partnership Review

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday for a two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates, where he will review the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and participate in the second Raisina Middle East Forum.

Upon his arrival, Jaishankar was received by UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy. He later stated that he looked forward to his discussions during the visit.

During his stay, Jaishankar is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The meeting will comprehensively assess progress under the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and explore ways to further strengthen strategic cooperation, trade and economic engagement.

The visit also includes Jaishankar’s participation in the second edition of the Raisina Middle East Forum in Abu Dhabi. The event is expected to bring together policymakers, diplomats and strategic experts to discuss key geopolitical and security developments affecting the Middle East and the wider region.

His visit comes at a time of continuing tensions across West Asia and heightened concerns over regional stability. Security developments have increasingly become a focus for Gulf states amid evolving regional challenges.

Earlier this week, UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash called for the revival of joint Gulf action, particularly in the areas of security and defence. He stressed the need to strengthen the collective security framework following escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Gargash said recent attacks had demonstrated that the security of Gulf countries was indivisible, arguing that threats directed at Saudi Arabia also affected the security of the UAE and the wider Gulf region. He warned that neglect of collective security arrangements had encouraged hostile actors to test regional limits and emphasised that Gulf security was a shared responsibility requiring urgent attention.

His remarks followed the 10 October attack on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport. The death toll from the incident rose to 13 after the Indian Embassy in Riyadh confirmed that an Indian national who had been injured in the attack later died. The attack has intensified calls for closer regional coordination on security and defence matters.

‘Hero of Humanity’: Israel To Honour Captain Smit Machchhar With Presidential Civilian Heroism Award

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has announced that Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar will receive Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of his actions during the dramatic flydubai Flight FZ1073 incident on 30 September.

Herzog made the announcement while praising the Indian aviator for preventing what he described as a potential catastrophe and safeguarding everyone aboard the aircraft.

In a message shared on X, the Israeli President described Machchhar as a hero not only of Israel and India but of humanity as a whole.

He said he had conveyed his wishes for the pilot’s full and speedy recovery and looked forward to welcoming him to Jerusalem once he had regained his strength.

Herzog stated that, on behalf of the people of Israel, it would be an honour to personally present Machchhar with the Israeli Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism following his recovery.

In a letter dated 4 October, the President thanked the Indian pilot for his exceptional courage and determination in bringing the aircraft safely through the crisis.

Herzog noted that while reports of the incident resembled a thriller, the reality faced in the cockpit would have involved immense fear, urgency and danger.

He praised Machchhar for continuing to exercise sound judgement despite suffering severe injuries, describing his conduct as a reflection of remarkable character and bravery.

The Israeli leader also linked the pilot’s actions to the long-standing historical connection between India and Israel.

He observed that Indian troops who fought in the Holy Land more than a century ago became a lasting part of Israel’s history and said Machchhar’s heroism would likewise be remembered by future generations.

According to Herzog, the pilot’s actions further strengthened the friendship and goodwill that have developed between India and Israel in recent decades.

The President also expressed confidence that Machchhar was receiving excellent treatment in the United Arab Emirates and reiterated his hope for a complete recovery.

The award announcement came after Herzog honoured six Israeli civilians who helped prevent an alleged attempt to hijack and crash the aircraft.

During the ceremony in Jerusalem, he acknowledged that Machchhar’s courage, professionalism and determination had played the central role in averting disaster.

The six Israeli recipients of the Presidential Medal for Civilian Heroism were Tali Manes, Zvika Manes, Yaniv Hayoun, Dr Shota Musayev, Asaf Rajuan and Or Pardilov.

They were recognised for assisting in restraining the attacker and helping ensure the safety of passengers and crew during the emergency.

Machchhar is currently recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi after sustaining serious injuries during the mid-air confrontation.

According to reports, his Omani co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, launched a violent attack inside the cockpit.

Despite being wounded, the Indian captain reportedly succeeded in unlatching the cockpit door, enabling passengers and off-duty crew members to enter and overpower the attacker.

The confrontation triggered a rapid descent, with the aircraft reportedly losing around 16,000 feet in approximately two minutes before a hijacking distress signal was transmitted.

The flight was subsequently diverted and carried out an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

All 180 people on board, including passengers and crew, disembarked safely.

The incident drew international attention and widespread praise for Machchhar’s actions from political leaders, aviation experts and the public.

The Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism was established to recognise civilians who display extraordinary courage while risking their own lives to save others, making the honour particularly significant.

Reports indicate that Machchhar will become one of the very few non-Israeli citizens to receive the distinction, underlining the exceptional nature of his actions. The Indian Embassy in the UAE has remained in regular contact with the pilot, his family, hospital authorities and local officials, providing assistance throughout his recovery.

As Machchhar continues his rehabilitation, Israel has made clear that his actions aboard Flight FZ1073 will be remembered as an extraordinary act of courage that prevented a far greater tragedy and saved the lives of everyone on board.

Indian Crew of 22 Safe After Drone Strike On Oil Tanker Near Sharjah, Says Union Minister Sonowal

All 22 Indian seafarers aboard the Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MT GEM NO. 2 are safe after the vessel was struck in a drone attack while anchored off Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates on 9 October, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.

In a statement shared on X, Sonowal confirmed that the tanker, carrying 22 Indian nationals as crew members, had been targeted at Sharjah Anchorage. He said all crew members were reported safe and unharmed following the incident.

The minister added that Indian authorities were closely monitoring developments and remained in contact with the ship management company to ensure the continued safety, security and welfare of the seafarers onboard.

Sharjah Anchorage is situated in the Arabian Gulf near Dubai and serves as an important maritime anchorage area for commercial vessels operating in the region.

The attack comes amid renewed concerns over threats to commercial shipping across key maritime corridors, particularly in the Gulf region and the Black Sea. A series of incidents involving merchant vessels and seafarers has heightened international efforts to improve maritime security and protect global trade routes.

Against this backdrop, the Ministry of External Affairs recently highlighted the objectives of the newly established Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers (GoF on S4). The initiative aims to bring together maritime nations and industry stakeholders to strengthen international cooperation and place the protection of seafarers and commercial shipping at the centre of global discussions.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the group seeks to coordinate countries involved in commercial shipping, maritime commerce and seafaring communities. Its objective is to enhance cooperation, reduce risks to merchant vessels and ensure the safety and security of seafarers.

According to Jaiswal, the group's inaugural meeting was held in New York and was jointly chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti. Representatives from 25 countries participated in the discussions.

India and Liberia, serving as co-chairs of the initiative, jointly condemned attacks on commercial vessels and seafarers operating in the Gulf region, surrounding waters and the Black Sea. The two countries described such attacks as unjustifiable, warning that they disrupt maritime trade, threaten regional stability and result in the loss of innocent lives.

The joint statement called for an immediate halt to attacks on commercial shipping in the interests of peace, stability and the safety of maritime personnel. It also expressed condolences to the families of seafarers killed in recent incidents and wished those injured a swift recovery.

The Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers was launched by India and Liberia on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The initiative seeks to improve coordination among nations, prevent further attacks on merchant shipping and strengthen protections for seafarers worldwide.

Jaishankar has emphasised that India, one of the world's leading suppliers of seafarers, partnered with Liberia, home to the world's largest shipping registry by tonnage, to address mounting concerns over attacks on commercial vessels and merchant mariners.

He underscored the urgency of the issue, stating that attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers must end.

US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Honours Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar In Congressional Record For Bravery During Flydubai Cockpit Attack

US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has formally honoured Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar in the US Congressional Record, recognising what he described as extraordinary bravery during an alleged hijacking attempt aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 on 30 September.

The Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight was carrying 180 occupants, including four US citizens and 27 children. According to the statement, the aircraft's first officer allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar with an emergency crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft while it was in flight.

The incident reportedly caused the aircraft to descend around 16,000 feet in roughly 30 seconds, creating a potentially catastrophic situation for everyone on board.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to reach and open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and overpower the attacker.

Two reserve flydubai pilots who were travelling on the aircraft subsequently took control and guided the flight safely to an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

In remarks entered into the Congressional Record on 9 October, Krishnamoorthi praised the captain's courage, professionalism and presence of mind, stating that his actions gave passengers and crew the opportunity to stop the attack and prevent a major disaster.

The Congressman also highlighted the human impact of the captain's actions, noting that every passenger aboard the flight was able to return safely to their loved ones because he refused to give up despite his injuries.

Krishnamoorthi called on fellow lawmakers to join him in recognising Captain Machchhar's heroism and extended best wishes to the pilot, his wife Sonal, their two children and their wider family, while expressing hope for his swift recovery.

The recognition comes shortly after Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced that Captain Machchhar would receive Israel's Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for helping to prevent the alleged attempt to crash the aircraft.

Herzog said the pilot's courage, professionalism and determination played a decisive role in averting a catastrophe. The President also honoured six Israeli civilians who assisted in thwarting the incident: Tali Manes, Zvika Manes, Yaniv Hayoun, Dr Shota Musayev, Asaf Rajuan and Or Pardilov.

Captain Machchhar is currently recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi after suffering serious injuries during the mid-air confrontation.

India's Ministry of External Affairs has said he is responding well to treatment and continuing to make progress. The Indian Embassy in the UAE has remained in close contact with his family, medical team and local authorities while extending all possible assistance.

Following the cockpit struggle, flydubai Flight FZ1073 was diverted to Tabuk, where all 180 occupants disembarked safely without injury, marking the successful conclusion of an incident that could otherwise have ended in tragedy.

US House Resolution Salutes Captain Smit Machchhar’s Bravery After Foiling Flydubai Terror Plot

The US House of Representatives has introduced a bipartisan resolution honouring Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his role in preventing an alleged terrorist attack aboard flydubai Flight 1073, while also recognising the courage of the crew and passengers who helped avert a potential catastrophe.

The resolution was introduced on 5 October by Congressmen Josh Gottheimer, Don Bacon and Michael McCaul and has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. It honours Machchhar and all those involved in securing the aircraft, while condemning the incident as an act of terrorism.

Flight 1073 departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv on 30 September carrying about 174 passengers, including four US citizens and 27 children. Most of those on board were reported to be Israeli citizens.

According to the resolution, the aircraft’s first officer allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar in the cockpit with the plane’s emergency crash axe in an attempt to seize control of the flight. During the struggle, the aircraft suffered a dramatic loss of more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds, creating a major aviation emergency.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, Machchhar resisted the attack and managed to unlock the cockpit door. His actions enabled off-duty pilots travelling on board to enter the flight deck and assist in regaining control, while cabin crew members and passengers helped restrain the alleged attacker.

The aircraft was safely diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where it landed with all passengers and crew accounted for. The alleged assailant was subsequently detained.

The resolution notes that the Attorney General of the United Arab Emirates announced on 3 October that the Emirati investigation had concluded that the first officer had attempted to carry out a terrorist act.

Lawmakers praised Machchhar’s “extraordinary courage” in protecting everyone on board and commended the off-duty pilots, cabin crew and passengers whose swift intervention helped prevent disaster. The measure also wishes a full recovery to Machchhar and others injured during the incident.

In addition, the resolution calls for a full and expeditious investigation by Saudi Arabia and the UAE and urges that both the United States and Israel be kept informed of developments and findings.

The Indian Embassy in the UAE has stated that Captain Machchhar is making steady progress in his recovery and remains under close medical supervision. The mission said it is maintaining contact with his family, healthcare teams and local authorities while extending all possible assistance.

Messages of support have continued to pour in from across the world. The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi recently organised special prayers and an abhishek ceremony for the pilot’s recovery, with saints, volunteers and community members gathering to honour his actions and support his family.

The temple said prayers would continue until Machchhar has fully recovered, expressing hope that he will eventually visit the Abu Dhabi Mandir with his family.

Reports from Israeli and international media have stated that Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami allegedly intended to direct the aircraft towards Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. Israeli authorities reportedly treated the incident as a potential hijacking, scrambled fighter aircraft and temporarily heightened airspace security measures before determining that the flight had diverted towards Saudi Arabia.

Separate reports indicated that Saudi Arabia also dispatched fighter jets as the emergency unfolded. Israeli officials later stood down their response once it became clear the aircraft was preparing for an emergency landing rather than proceeding towards Tel Aviv.

US President Donald Trump later said he personally believed Iran was responsible for the attempted terrorist attack. However, no official investigation findings publicly released so far have attributed responsibility beyond the individual accused attacker.

The incident has attracted significant international attention, with Captain Machchhar receiving widespread praise from political leaders, aviation professionals and members of the public for actions credited with saving every life on board and preventing what could have become one of the most serious aviation security incidents in recent years.

Israel Was Prepared To Shoot Down Flydubai Jet After Mid-Air Cockpit Attack Threatened Tel Aviv

Israel was prepared to take the extraordinary step of shooting down a Flydubai passenger aircraft carrying more than 150 Israeli citizens after a violent cockpit attack raised fears of a potential hijacking and a possible strike against targets in Israel.

The crisis unfolded on September 30 aboard Flydubai Flight 1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami allegedly stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar and attempted to seize control of the aircraft.

As the struggle erupted in the cockpit, the aircraft entered a dramatic descent, reportedly losing around 16,000 feet in little more than 30 seconds. The sudden plunge triggered alarm within Israel's security establishment, which feared the aircraft could be heading towards a 9/11-style attack scenario.

Efforts by the Israeli Air Force to establish radio contact with the cockpit received no response. In response, emergency protocols were immediately activated.

Israeli authorities established a command centre, closed national airspace and scrambled fighter aircraft to assess the developing threat. The incident was treated as a possible hijacking involving an aircraft approaching Israeli territory.

According to reports, Israeli fighter pilots were prepared to intercept the aircraft and conduct close visual inspections of both the cockpit and passenger cabin if the jet had continued towards Tel Aviv.

Their objective would have been to determine whether the aircraft had been successfully hijacked and whether passengers appeared to be under duress.

Had a hijacking been confirmed and the attackers remained silent, the matter would have been escalated to Israel's top political leadership, including the Defence Minister and Prime Minister.

Under Israeli procedures, the authority to order the destruction of a civilian aircraft rests solely with the Prime Minister.

Israeli officials reportedly believed that, if necessary, the aircraft could have been intercepted before reaching major national targets such as Ben Gurion Airport or Tel Aviv's Azrieli Centre.

The situation changed when authorities determined that the aircraft had diverted away from Israel and was heading towards Saudi Arabia.

Israeli fighter jets were subsequently recalled, while Saudi Arabia scrambled its own aircraft as the emergency unfolded within the region's airspace.

The crisis was ultimately resolved through the actions of Captain Machchhar, who continued fighting despite suffering severe injuries after being attacked with a cockpit crash axe. The injured captain succeeded in unlocking the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene.

Passengers then overpowered al-Hammami, ending the immediate threat inside the cockpit.

Two off-duty pilots travelling aboard the flight subsequently took control of the aircraft and safely diverted it to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, bringing one of the most serious aviation security incidents in recent years to a close.

Flydubai Co-Pilot Allegedly Plotted 9/11-Style Attack On Israel's Ben Gurion Airport

Investigators are examining allegations that Flydubai First Officer Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national currently under arrest, intended to carry out a mass-casualty attack by crashing Flight 1073 into a target in Israel after allegedly killing the aircraft's captain.

According to reports, al-Hammami told investigators he planned to continue the flight normally after incapacitating Captain Smit Machchhar, allowing him to obtain routine landing clearances and avoid raising suspicion before attempting to crash the aircraft into a building or another aircraft at Ben Gurion Airport.

Investigators were told that the alleged attack was launched while the aircraft was passing over Jordan and approaching Israeli airspace. Al-Hammami reportedly believed that acting shortly before arrival would leave little time for authorities or passengers to intervene.

Reports further claimed that, had he been unable to reach his intended target at the airport, he considered crashing the aircraft into a skyscraper in Tel Aviv or a US military installation in Jordan.

The plan was ultimately disrupted when Captain Machchhar, despite suffering serious head injuries, fought back. He reportedly transmitted distress signals and opened the cockpit door, enabling cabin crew and passengers to overpower the co-pilot. Two off-duty pilots then assisted in safely bringing the aircraft to Saudi Arabia.

Speaking from hospital in Abu Dhabi last week, Captain Machchhar said al-Hammami had asked for permission to pray shortly before allegedly attacking him with a crash axe. The captain initially believed the aircraft had been struck before realising the blows were coming from inside the cockpit.

Israeli media reports claimed that al-Hammami had originally intended to carry out the attack in July but delayed it because he had formed a friendship with one of the crew members.

Sources cited in those reports said he had travelled to Ben Gurion Airport multiple times after joining Flydubai and allegedly used a June visit to gather information and prepare for the operation.

According to another report, al-Hammami claimed he specifically sought employment with Flydubai because the airline operated services between the UAE and Tel Aviv. He allegedly told investigators that he had conceived the plan even before being hired.

An Italian newspaper reported that, after the alleged assault on the captain, al-Hammami switched off the aircraft's engines and pushed the rudders forward. The aircraft reportedly descended around 16,000 feet in less than a minute and reached an extremely high speed before control was regained.

The incident has triggered scrutiny of aviation security procedures across several countries. Preliminary findings have raised questions about how an individual allegedly known for extremist views was able to continue flying commercially.

Officials have reportedly stated that Oman had previously restricted al-Hammami from flying because of concerns linked to his alleged extremist beliefs.

Questions have also been raised over how an Omani citizen from a country without diplomatic relations with Israel was permitted to operate flights carrying Israeli passengers into Tel Aviv.

Reports described al-Hammami, 29, as the son of an Omani father and a Syrian mother. He reportedly spent time in Syria during the civil war and was alleged to have shared online content expressing support for al-Qaeda.

The incident has also prompted debate over passenger and crew vetting procedures. Regional officials said Emirati authorities routinely shared details about passengers and crew members, including nationalities, and that Israeli authorities did not initially raise concerns regarding anyone on board.

Israel's Shin Bet said responsibility for reviewing foreign flight manifests rests with the Transportation Ministry. However, Transport Minister Miri Regev stated that security agencies are responsible for aviation security and that her ministry had not received the relevant passenger information or warnings.

Aviation officials noted that sharing such information is standard procedure, but the head of aviation security at the Transportation Ministry said the ministry relies on security checks conducted in the country of origin and lacks the capability to individually screen every passenger and crew member on every international flight.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to determine how the alleged plot developed, whether warning signs were missed, and what security changes may be required to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Confirmed: Flydubai Co-Pilot Used Cockpit Crash Axe In Terrorist Attack Says UAE

The United Arab Emirates has formally described the dramatic incident aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv as an attempted terrorist attack, stating that co-pilot Hamam Alhammami allegedly assaulted Captain Smit Machchhar with a cockpit crash axe and attempted to seize control of the aircraft.

According to investigators, Alhammami launched the attack while the Boeing 737 was cruising at around 34,000 feet, triggering a serious in-flight emergency aboard an aircraft carrying more than 170 passengers and crew, including 24 children.

A crash axe is standard emergency equipment carried in commercial aircraft cockpits under international aviation regulations.

The tool is intended for emergency situations, including gaining access through aircraft structures following accidents. Following the 9/11 attacks, such equipment was moved from passenger cabins to secured cockpit areas.

UAE prosecutors said the co-pilot attempted to take control of the aircraft after attacking the captain. Authorities have classified the incident as an attempted terrorist act and have launched a wider investigation into the suspect's motives, digital footprint and any potential links to extremist organisations. Investigators are also examining whether he acted alone or was influenced by a broader network.

The situation rapidly escalated as the aircraft entered a steep descent. Reports indicate the jet dropped from approximately 34,000 feet to around 15,600 feet, creating panic among passengers and crew.

Despite suffering severe injuries, Captain Machchhar reportedly managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling cabin crew and passengers to intervene. Their actions helped overpower the attacker and prevent what officials and investigators believe could have become a catastrophic crash.

Video recorded inside the aircraft showed scenes of chaos, with the injured captain lying in a pool of blood while describing how he had been attacked by his co-pilot.

A passenger who was a dentist reportedly provided urgent medical assistance to Captain Machchhar while two relief flydubai pilots on board stepped in to assume control of the aircraft. The flight was subsequently diverted to Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

The UAE Attorney General's office stated that the investigation remains ongoing and that findings will be released once all necessary legal and forensic procedures have been completed. The UAE is leading the probe, with international cooperation expected from other interested authorities.

Alhammami has been identified as an Omani national. Reports emerging after the incident indicate that he had previously faced restrictions on flying duties in Oman amid concerns that he had adopted extremist views.

According to those reports, he worked as a co-pilot trainee with Oman Air in 2024 and was allegedly found in possession of extremist material. He was subsequently transferred to an administrative role before leaving the airline in February 2025.

He later joined Royal Air Maroc in June 2025 before departing in January 2026. He then joined flydubai, where he served for approximately eight months before the incident.

The revelations have raised questions about aviation sector background-screening procedures and how an individual reportedly flagged over extremist concerns was subsequently able to secure flight-deck positions with other carriers, including on the politically sensitive UAE-Israel route.

Additional reports have suggested that investigators are examining claims that Alhammami may have intended to crash the aircraft in Israel, although authorities have not yet released final conclusions regarding the full scope of his alleged plans.

Captain Machchhar's actions, alongside the intervention of crew members, passengers and relief pilots, have been widely credited with preventing one of the most serious aviation security incidents in recent years. Several passengers and officials have described the Indian captain as a hero for continuing to fight for control of the situation despite sustaining life-threatening injuries.

Dubai Crown Prince Hamdan Honours Hero Pilot Smit Machchhar During Hospital Visit

Captain Smit Machchhar's remarkable actions aboard a flydubai flight have drawn further recognition after Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum paid him a visit in hospital.

The Indian pilot is recovering in Dubai after being seriously injured during a violent confrontation in the cockpit. According to reports, the co-pilot attempted to seize control of the aircraft in an effort to crash it.

Even while suffering severe injuries, Machchhar succeeded in opening the cockpit door, a critical move that enabled assistance to reach the flight deck and helped avert a catastrophe involving 174 people on board.

His response to the emergency has led to widespread acclaim internationally, with many praising his composure, courage and commitment to passenger safety.

During his visit, Sheikh Hamdan personally thanked the captain and highlighted the values reflected in his actions. The Crown Prince described Machchhar as a member of the UAE team and a symbol of the country's commitment to compassion, peace and the preservation of life.

In a statement posted on social media after the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan said the pilot had earned the full appreciation and praise of the nation's leadership for demonstrating extraordinary courage and responsibility.

Images from the hospital showed the Crown Prince meeting and embracing Machchhar, underscoring the significance attached to the captain's actions.

The visit represents the latest recognition for a pilot whose determination under extreme circumstances helped prevent a potentially devastating aviation tragedy and saved the lives of everyone aboard the aircraft.

Omani Co-Pilot's Alleged Al-Qaeda Indoctrination Under Scrutiny After Tel Aviv Flight Attack

Investigators examining the 30 September attack aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 have reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting that Omani co-pilot Hamam Alhamami underwent indoctrination into Al-Qaeda ideology and held meetings with religious figures believed to have played a role in his radicalisation.

According to reports, Alhamami had previously been prevented from flying in Oman because of concerns over extremist views. Sources indicated that much of his time had been spent outside Oman, particularly in Syria, where he was allegedly exposed to radical influences before later relocating to the UAE.

Israeli and Arab media reports stated that investigators are treating the Syria connection as a significant element of the case. Concerns surrounding his ideological beliefs and aviation background have consequently become central to the wider terrorism investigation.

Sources cited by Israeli media said the co-pilot allegedly told investigators that he intended to crash the aircraft in Israel, raising fears of a potential mass-casualty event comparable to the 11 September attacks in the United States.

Further reports indicated that Oman Air had previously removed him from pilot training because of concerns about radical views. Although he was reportedly assigned another role, questions are now being raised about how he subsequently secured employment with Flydubai.

CNN reported that the suspect was born in the UAE to an Omani father and a Syrian mother and spent several years living in the Emirates. Additional reports suggested that concerns regarding his conduct had surfaced well before he joined Flydubai.

According to sources quoted by Fox News, Oman Air grounded the co-pilot in 2024 after discovering that he had been visiting radical Islamic websites. The same sources claimed that he later moved to Dubai and that Flydubai did not consult Oman Air before employing him.

The incident unfolded while the aircraft was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the cockpit assault, the aircraft reportedly descended around 16,000 feet within two minutes before a hijacking distress signal was transmitted.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Captain Smit Machchhar managed to resist the attack and open the cockpit door. Cabin crew members and passengers then entered the cockpit and helped restrain the attacker, enabling the flight crew to regain control.

Two off-duty aviators travelling on the flight also assisted in stabilising the situation before the aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All 180 people on board disembarked safely.

Investigators are also examining material allegedly recovered from the co-pilot's belongings. Reports stated that leaflets and publications linked to Free Palestine groups, together with other pro-Palestinian material, were discovered and are being reviewed as part of the inquiry.

Media reports further alleged that the co-pilot had repeatedly expressed support for Palestinians and hostility towards Israel. Authorities are examining whether those views were connected to broader claims of Islamic radicalisation and possible terrorist motives.

The investigation is now focused not only on the events inside the cockpit but also on the sequence of developments that preceded them, including his reported time in Syria, concerns raised during previous employment, alleged extremist beliefs and the recruitment processes that enabled him to fly a passenger service bound for Tel Aviv.

Captain Machchhar's actions have drawn widespread praise. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended his courage and presence of mind, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described his conduct as instrumental in preventing what could have become another 9/11-style tragedy.

The suspect was subsequently transferred from Saudi Arabia to the UAE, where he is facing a terrorism investigation as authorities continue to examine the full scope of the incident and the factors that may have led to the alleged attack.

‘A Terror Attack, Not A Dispute’: Israel Envoy Hails Captain Smit Machchhar’s Heroics In Flydubai Mid-Air Crisis

Israel’s Consul General in Mumbai, Yaniv Revach, has strongly backed Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, describing the Flydubai cockpit attack as an unequivocal act of terrorism rather than a dispute between flight crew members.

Speaking amid growing international attention on the incident, Revach said there was no ambiguity surrounding the nature of the attack and praised Machchhar’s actions as instrumental in preventing what he described as a potentially catastrophic terrorist assault aboard the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight.

The Israeli diplomat announced plans for a public awareness campaign to honour the Indian captain, including large billboards expressing gratitude for his actions. He said Israel wished to publicly recognise Machchhar’s courage and sacrifice.

Revach criticised sections of the international media, particularly Al Jazeera and outlets he claimed had mischaracterised the incident as a conflict between an Indian captain and an Omani co-pilot. He argued that such portrayals ignored the gravity of the attack and obscured what he believes was an act of terrorism.

According to Revach, Machchhar sustained severe injuries to his hands and neck during the struggle. He noted that the captain has already been transferred to a hospital in the UAE and expressed confidence in his medical care while wishing him a rapid recovery.

The envoy also suggested that Machchhar deserves formal recognition from the Israeli state, including potential honours from the Israeli President and government once he has recovered.

Revach further argued that the captain’s actions may have prevented a major geopolitical crisis. He said the incident highlighted the strength of India-Israel relations, pointing to the cooperation between the injured Indian pilot, crew members and Israeli passengers who helped regain control of the aircraft and ensure a safe landing.

While some theories regarding the attacker’s motives continue to circulate, Revach said investigators should await the conclusions of the UAE-led inquiry. He expressed confidence that Emirati and Israeli authorities would work closely to establish the full facts.

On the aviation impact, he expressed hope that the suspension of Flydubai services to Israel would not significantly disrupt air links, noting that more than 23 daily flights continue to operate between Israel and the UAE through other carriers.

The diplomat also warned about the influence of online radicalisation, claiming extremist narratives on social media and certain media platforms could encourage individuals to commit acts of violence. He said Israel remains accustomed to operating under constant security threats and sees common cause with India in confronting terrorism and extremism.

Revach additionally criticised Pakistan, accusing it of pursuing contradictory policies and contributing to regional instability through radicalisation. He also referred to Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and argued that global reactions to such incidents often reveal double standards.

The envoy said shared security challenges would continue to deepen strategic ties between India and Israel. He highlighted the potential of combining Israeli technology with India’s industrial scale and workforce to expand defence manufacturing and technological cooperation.

Drawing a historical parallel, Revach recalled the actions of Sandra Samuel during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, when she rescued a Jewish child from the Chabad House siege. He said both Samuel’s actions and Machchhar’s heroism reflected a longstanding bond between the Indian and Israeli peoples.

Meanwhile, international investigations into the Flydubai incident continue. Israeli broadcaster i24 News reported that investigators discovered pro-Palestinian literature and material linked to “Free Palestine” groups among the belongings of the Omani co-pilot. Reports also indicate that the co-pilot had previously expressed support for Palestinians and hostility towards Israel.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the co-pilot held only Omani nationality, prompting scrutiny over how an individual from a country without diplomatic relations with Israel was assigned to operate the route. Investigators are examining whether ideological radicalisation or external influences played a role in the attack.

The incident occurred on 30 September aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to accounts emerging from the investigation, the Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Machchhar in an apparent attempt to bring down the aircraft.

The struggle triggered a dramatic loss of altitude, with reports indicating the Boeing 737 MAX descended roughly 14,000 to 16,000 feet within seconds before emergency and unlawful interference signals were transmitted. Reports state the aircraft was carrying between 174 and 182 people, including dozens of children.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar reportedly fought back and managed to unlock or release the cockpit door. This enabled flight attendants, passengers and off-duty aviators travelling onboard to enter the flight deck and restrain the attacker.

Two qualified pilots travelling as passengers subsequently helped stabilise the aircraft and guide it to a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All passengers and crew survived the ordeal. The co-pilot was arrested following the landing and later transferred to the UAE as investigations expanded. Israeli investigators have joined Emirati authorities in examining the attack, while officials continue to assess whether the incident was an isolated act or part of a broader extremist plot.

As details continue to emerge, Captain Smit Machchhar has become a symbol of resilience and courage, earning praise from leaders in India, Israel and other countries for actions widely credited with preventing a major aviation disaster and saving the lives of everyone aboard the flight.

Machchhar was commanding flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a violent incident reportedly unfolded inside the cockpit. The pilot was allegedly stabbed by his co-pilot, who is accused of attempting to seize control of the aircraft during the flight.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew, passengers and other personnel on board to intervene. The aircraft was subsequently diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, preventing further escalation of the crisis.

He was initially treated at a hospital in Tabuk before being transferred to the UAE for further medical care.

The incident has attracted international attention, with widespread praise for the pilot's composure, professionalism and bravery under extreme circumstances. Reports surrounding the case indicate that his actions were instrumental in ensuring the safety of all those aboard the aircraft.

Earlier, the Gujarat government announced that it would honour the pilot for his extraordinary courage.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said Captain Machchhar would receive the prestigious Visisht Gujarat Garima Award in recognition of his efforts in safeguarding the lives of 174 passengers during the attack.

The Chief Minister said the pilot’s bravery is being recognised across the world and praised him for continuing to fight to save passengers despite sustaining severe injuries.

Calling him a “valiant son of Gujarat”, Patel said the pilot had brought immense pride to both Gujarat and India through his heroism. He added that people across the state are praying for Machchhar’s speedy recovery and that the thoughts and prayers of citizens throughout the country are with him as he continues to recover.

The recognition from Gujarat adds to a growing wave of appreciation for the pilot, whose presence of mind and determination during one of the most serious in-flight emergencies in recent aviation memory have earned admiration both in India and abroad.

Captain Smit Machchhar Hailed As Hero By PM Modi After Foiling FlyDubai Mid-Air Crash Attempt

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery after the Indian pilot helped prevent a catastrophic incident aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Machchhar, a resident of Ghatkopar East in Mumbai who is based in Dubai for work, was allegedly stabbed by his co-pilot during a violent altercation inside the cockpit of a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

The confrontation triggered a dramatic in-flight emergency, with the aircraft reportedly plunging around 14,300 feet in roughly 30 seconds while flying over northern Saudi Arabia. The aircraft also transmitted a hijack alert during the crisis.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Captain Machchhar continued to resist the attacker and reportedly managed to unlock and open the cockpit door. His actions proved crucial in preventing a far greater tragedy.

Prime Minister Modi described the pilot as a hero, stating that he displayed immense courage and unwavering determination to protect the lives of those on board despite being gravely injured. The Prime Minister added that India was proud of Captain Machchhar and wished him a speedy recovery and good health.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also commended the Indian pilot, saying his actions helped avert a catastrophic mid-air disaster. Netanyahu credited Machchhar with fighting back against the alleged attacker and enabling passengers and crew members to intervene.

According to passenger Yaniv Hayun, the captain opened the cockpit door shortly before collapsing from his injuries. Hayun said that he and several other passengers then rushed into the cockpit and helped restrain the attacker.

The passenger further claimed that the alleged assailant was attempting to damage the aircraft's controls and disable the plane. Travellers and crew members reportedly succeeded in overpowering and removing him from the cockpit.

The Flydubai flight was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children, along with six crew members. Following the emergency, the aircraft diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Reports indicate that additional qualified pilots who were travelling on the aircraft assisted after the cockpit was secured, helping ensure a safe landing.

Both pilots were subsequently taken to hospital. Captain Machchhar underwent surgery and was reported to be in a stable condition. The co-pilot was arrested by Saudi authorities, while investigators continue to examine the motive behind the incident.

Machchhar is an experienced commercial aviator with nearly 9,750 flying hours. He previously spent more than a decade with SpiceJet before joining Flydubai as a captain in 2022.

The incident has drawn international attention, with leaders in India, Israel and elsewhere praising the Indian pilot's composure and courage under extreme circumstances.

His actions are widely credited with saving the lives of everyone on board and preventing what could have become one of the most serious aviation disasters in recent years.

‘Israel’s 9/11’ Averted: Injured Indian Captain Smit Machchhar And Passengers Foil Flydubai Cockpit Attack

On a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, an mid-air attack was thwarted through the extraordinary brave actions of its captain and quick-thinking passengers.

The incident occurred aboard flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 carrying up to 180 passengers, when the Omani co-pilot stabbed the aircraft’s captain, Captain Smit Machchhar, over Saudi Arabian airspace in an apparent attempt to take control of the plane.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling three Israeli passengers to rush in and tackle the attacker. Among them, a passenger seized the control column to pull the aircraft out of a steep nosedive, while others restrained the suspect using headphone wires.

Off-duty pilots travelling as passengers subsequently stepped in to secure the flight deck and safely land the aircraft at Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia.

Former Israeli Government Spokesperson Eylon Levy and Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar both praised Captain Machchhar and the passengers, emphasising that their decisive actions averted what could have been a 9/11-style catastrophe. Unlike traditional hijackings, authorities suspect the attacker intended to use the aircraft as a weapon, either crashing it in the desert or targeting a building in Israeli airspace.

The Omani co-pilot remains in Saudi custody as regional authorities conduct a thorough investigation, including analysing flight data and cockpit voice recorders.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel is closely following the probe and seeking participation, while discussions are underway regarding the suspect's potential transfer to the United Arab Emirates.

Following the incident, Flydubai has temporarily suspended its flights to and from Israel, while aviation authorities worldwide prepare to review cockpit security and emergency protocols. Captain Machchhar, a veteran pilot with over 13 years of experience and 9,750 flight hours, is being widely recognised alongside the heroic passengers for preventing a massive tragedy.

Israel President Herzog To Honour Passengers Who Helped Foil Flydubai Cockpit Attack, Thanks Indian Pilot

Israel President Isaac Herzog has announced plans to recommend the President’s Medal for Civilian Bravery for four passengers who displayed extraordinary courage during a mid-air cockpit attack aboard an Israel-bound Flydubai flight.

Herzog said he had spoken to Yinon Hayon, Tzvika Mans, Asaf Reguan and Dr Shota Mosiashvili, and informed them of his intention to recommend them for the civilian bravery medal. He also acknowledged the contribution of Tali Mans, who heard voices from the cockpit and alerted those around her.

Herzog praised the alternate pilots who entered the cockpit and completed the flight until landing.

He also expressed gratitude to Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who opened the cockpit door despite being seriously injured, enabling passengers and crew members to intervene and neutralise the attacker.

“To Captain Smit Machchhar — thank you from the bottom of my heart for the bravery, determination and actions that saved many lives. I wish you a full recovery and strong health. The State of Israel extends immense gratitude to you,” Herzog said.

The recommendation for the civilian bravery medal will be placed before the advisory committee of the President’s Medal for Civilian Bravery. The committee is headed by a retired judge.

“These are the beautiful and brave faces of Israeli society,” Herzog said.

The announcement followed a violent mid-air incident aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Captain Machchhar was seriously injured during an altercation in the cockpit. Despite his injuries, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to enter.

Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, had earlier praised Machchhar’s actions, saying they enabled passengers to enter the cockpit and help neutralise the attacker.

Azar said Machchhar had been stabbed by his co-pilot but was still able to open the cockpit door. He said this allowed three Israeli passengers to enter the cockpit and restrain the attacker. According to Azar, a doctor subsequently treated Machchhar, while additional pilots who had been travelling as passengers entered the cockpit and took over the flight.

Azar said the combined actions of the captain, passengers, crew members and additional pilots saved the aircraft and its 180 passengers. He said the incident could have resulted in another 9/11-style tragedy if the attacker had taken control of the aircraft.

Azar added that all passengers were safe and that Israeli health teams were present at the airport to assist those affected. He said authorities had also heard testimonies from Israeli passengers on board.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar’s courage, saying the Indian pilot’s actions, together with those of the passengers and other crew members, had prevented what could have been another 9/11.

In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu said Machchhar had been badly wounded and was bleeding when he managed to unlock the cockpit door as the aircraft went into a nosedive. Netanyahu said Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayon then rushed towards the cockpit and saw the attacking pilot attempting to control the aircraft.

Hayon reportedly grabbed the attacker from behind, pulled him back, entered the pilot’s seat and pulled the control column back. Two other passengers then helped restrain the attacker. Reserve crew members subsequently entered the cockpit and helped stabilise the aircraft.

Netanyahu said Hayon told him that he had acted because families and other passengers were on board.

Hayon was quoted as saying that he had to act because his family and 174 other passengers, most of them Israelis, were on the aircraft.

Netanyahu described the intervention by Hayon, Machchhar and the others as an extraordinary act of heroism that prevented a disaster which could have had global consequences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar for his courage, patience and presence of mind during the incident. PM Modi said Machchhar’s actions had helped avert a major tragedy and remarked that, as Israel’s Prime Minister had said, an Indian had prevented a 9/11-style tragedy.

Modi said Machchhar’s bravery had filled every Indian citizen with pride. He added that he had spoken to Machchhar’s father, Bhupendrabhai, his mother, Gitaben, and his wife, Sonalben, and enquired about the pilot’s health.

Modi appealed to citizens to pray for Machchhar’s long life and speedy recovery. He also urged people to honour him for enhancing India’s pride and honour. Captain Machchhar has more than 13 years of commercial aviation experience and approximately 9,750 flying hours.

He has primarily operated Boeing 737 aircraft. Before joining Flydubai, Machchhar spent 11 years with SpiceJet, where he served as a Line Training Captain.

Flydubai has temporarily suspended flights to and from Israel while the investigation into the mid-air cockpit incident continues.

In a message posted on X, Jaishankar said he was deeply grieved by the death of Sheikh Ahmed and conveyed his sympathies to Dubai’s ruling family and citizens. He stated that India’s thoughts were with the Royal Family and the people of Dubai, while praying for the departed leader’s soul to rest in peace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, describing his passing as a significant loss.

The Prime Minister praised Sheikh Ahmed’s lifelong dedication to public service and noted that his efforts on behalf of society would be remembered for generations. Modi conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Dubai, while offering prayers for eternal peace.

The tributes from India came shortly after the Court of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum formally announced that Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum had passed away on Monday morning at the age of 76.

Following the announcement, Dubai authorities declared a 10-day period of official mourning across the emirate. During this period, flags are being flown at half-mast in honour of the late royal figure.

The announcement was made by the Government of Dubai Media Office, which stated that the Court of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, was mourning the passing of Sheikh Ahmed and had ordered the official mourning arrangements with immediate effect.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also paid an emotional tribute to his younger brother, describing him as a cherished member of both the family and the wider community. His tribute reflected the personal and public significance Sheikh Ahmed held within Dubai and the UAE.

The passing of Sheikh Ahmed has prompted tributes from across the Emirates and the wider Gulf region. Senior political leaders, members of ruling families and public institutions have remembered him as a public servant who contributed to security, business development, sport and community causes over several decades.

Born in 1950, Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was the fourth and youngest son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the late ruler credited with helping transform Dubai into a major regional and global commercial centre.

After completing his education at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, Sheikh Ahmed joined Dubai’s Central Military Command. He went on to rise through the ranks and eventually became Commander-in-Chief of the military base, establishing an early reputation for discipline, leadership and public service.

His subsequent career was closely linked with Dubai’s security establishment. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, a role that placed him within one of the UAE’s most important public institutions. His long association with the security sector coincided with decades of rapid development and modernisation across Dubai.

Beyond public service, Sheikh Ahmed became a prominent figure in the UAE’s business community. He served as Group Chairman of A.R.M. Holding, one of Dubai’s major investment groups, and was also associated with significant real estate and commercial initiatives that supported the emirate’s economic growth.

Several regional publications have also noted his role as Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and his involvement with the Dubai Real Estate Centre, reflecting the breadth of his responsibilities across government and business affairs.

Sheikh Ahmed was equally well known for his contributions to sport. He served as President of Al Wasl Sports Club for six decades, making him one of the longest-serving figures in Emirati sports administration. Under his leadership, Al Wasl developed into one of the UAE’s most recognised and successful sporting institutions.

Al Wasl Sports Club has described Sheikh Ahmed as one of the pioneers of modern UAE sport, noting that his commitment helped strengthen football and broader sporting culture across the country.

His influence extended beyond football. In the early 1990s, Sheikh Ahmed established the Jebel Ali Racecourse, a move that played an important role in expanding horse racing within the UAE. The racecourse became an important component of the country’s equestrian calendar and contributed to the international profile of Emirati horse racing.

Over the years, Sheikh Ahmed became widely associated with the UAE’s equestrian sector. His efforts helped support the growth of horse racing infrastructure and reinforced Dubai’s reputation as a global centre for the sport.

He was also linked to marine sports initiatives and other sporting organisations that contributed to the development of recreational and competitive activities throughout the Emirates.

In addition to his public and sporting roles, Sheikh Ahmed was recognised for supporting charitable and community-focused initiatives. His philanthropic engagement and backing for social causes earned him respect across different sectors of Emirati society.

The announcement of his death has therefore resonated far beyond political circles, with tributes highlighting his contributions to security, business, sport, philanthropy and national development.

As Dubai enters its official mourning period, Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is being remembered as a member of the generation that helped shape the emirate’s modern identity. His career spanned military service, public security, business leadership, real estate development, sport and community service, leaving a legacy that remains deeply intertwined with Dubai’s transformation and growth over the past several decades.

Consulate General In Dubai Mourns Death of Indian Seafarer In Unfortunate Maritime Incident

The Consulate General of India in Dubai has expressed its condolences following the death of an Indian crew member in what has been described as an unfortunate incident at sea. In its statement, the consulate noted that it is in contact with the ship’s owner and is working to ascertain further details surrounding the tragedy.

The consulate emphasised that it will provide all possible assistance on priority to ensure that the matter is handled with due care and sensitivity. In a message posted on X, the consulate said it was saddened to learn of the incident and conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

This development comes against the backdrop of recent assurances from Indian authorities that seafarers in the Gulf region remain safe. On 6 May, Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director of Shipping at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, stated during an Inter-Ministerial Briefing on West Asia that all Indian seafarers were safe between 4 and 6 May, with no incidents reported involving Indian-flagged vessels or foreign-flagged vessels carrying Indian nationals

He highlighted that the Ministry has facilitated the safe repatriation of more than 2,999 seafarers from the Gulf region, including 23 in the preceding 48 hours, underscoring the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard maritime workers.

Sharma further explained that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways continues to coordinate closely with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions abroad, and maritime stakeholders to ensure seafarer welfare and uninterrupted maritime operations.

He expressed satisfaction that port operations across India remain normal, with no congestion reported, despite the volatile situation in West Asia. The Directorate General of Shipping has played a central role in facilitating the repatriation process, ensuring that Indian nationals stranded in the Gulf are brought home safely.

The incident reported by the consulate in Dubai marks a tragic exception to the otherwise stable situation described earlier in the week. While details of the circumstances leading to the crew member’s death are awaited, the consulate’s swift response and assurance of assistance reflect India’s commitment to protecting its citizens working in challenging maritime environments.

The tragedy also underscores the inherent risks faced by seafarers operating in conflict-prone waters, despite the best efforts of authorities to maintain safety and security.

The Indian government has consistently prioritised the welfare of its seafarers, particularly in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, where tensions have periodically disrupted commercial shipping.

The coordination between ministries, missions, and maritime agencies has been crucial in ensuring that Indian nationals are safeguarded and repatriated when necessary.

The latest incident will likely prompt further scrutiny of safety protocols and reinforce the importance of continued vigilance in the region.

Iran Acquired Chinese Satellite To Track And Attack US Bases: Report

Iran relied on a Chinese-built satellite it quietly obtained last year to help track US military positions across the Middle East during the recent conflict, the Financial Times has reported.

The satellite, known as TEE-01B, was originally developed and launched by the Chinese firm Earth Eye Company before being transferred to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Aerospace Force.

Earth Eye Company operates under an unusual export model called “in-orbit delivery,” in which spacecraft launched in China are only handed over to overseas buyers once they have successfully reached orbit.

Iranian commanders are said to have tasked the satellite with observing key American military installations in the region. As part of the arrangement, the IRGC was also granted access to a network of commercial ground stations operated by Emposat, a Beijing-based satellite services provider with operations spanning Asia, Latin America, and other regions.

The satellite reportedly captured imagery of Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base on 13, 14, and 15 March. On 14 March, US President Donald Trump acknowledged that American aircraft stationed there had been damaged. TEE-01B is also said to have tracked activity around Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, sites near the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, and Erbil Airport in Iraq, coinciding with IRGC claims of strikes in those areas.

Its surveillance footprint extended further, covering US-linked facilities such as Camp Buehring and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, and Duqm International Airport in Oman. Civilian infrastructure was also monitored, including the Khor Fakkan container port and the Qidfa power and desalination complex in the United Arab Emirates, as well as Bahrain’s Alba aluminium plant, one of the largest in the world.

A former senior Western intelligence official told the publication, “There is no way that any Chinese company could do something like launch a satellite without somebody in the administration giving it the go-ahead. I think it’s been very clear for some time that China has been helping the Iranians with intelligence, but trying to keep the hand of government hidden.”

The reported use of a Chinese-origin satellite by the IRGC, particularly during a conflict in which Iran has repeatedly launched missiles and drones at neighbouring countries, is likely to heighten concerns across the Gulf.

These sensitivities are amplified by China’s deep economic ties in the region, where it is both the leading trading partner and the largest buyer of oil.

Separately, earlier reports suggested that Iran also gained access to Russian satellite intelligence on US and Israeli targets after the US-Israeli bombing campaign in Iran began on 28 February.

China’s Foreign Ministry has repeatedly denied in recent days that the country is providing any form of military support to Iran. Nonetheless, the US government has long accused China of supporting Iran’s ballistic missile program and supplying dual-use industrial components that can be employed in missile production.
