India’s Military Power Lies In The Ability To Keep Fighting

India’s military readiness is being tested not just by advanced platforms like the AMCA fighter or hypersonic missiles, but by whether the nation can sustain war through industrial resilience, rapid replenishment, and technological sovereignty.
The real measure of power lies in the ability to keep fighting tomorrow, and the defence ecosystem is being reshaped to meet that challenge.
India’s defence transformation is no longer about acquiring individual weapons. It is about building a complete war-fighting ecosystem that integrates fighters, missiles, drones, loitering munitions, and layered air defence into a coherent industrial and operational framework.
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program exemplifies this ambition, with Reliance and Rolls-Royce partnering to develop a sovereign combat engine and establish an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India.
This facility will cover design, manufacturing, testing, and long-term support, aiming to end dependence on foreign propulsion systems.
The revival of the indigenous Kaveri 2.0 engine has already achieved thrust levels of 81–83 kilonewtons, with advanced materials and digital twin modelling accelerating progress.
This engine is expected to power future TEJAS upgrades, unmanned combat aircraft, and eventually the AMCA. Such developments are critical because imported GE F404/F414 engines have faced delivery delays, highlighting the vulnerability of foreign reliance.
Missile production is expanding rapidly. India has successfully tested the Long-Range Hypersonic Anti-Ship Missile (LR-AShM), capable of striking targets 1,500 km away at speeds up to Mach 10. Equipped with indigenous radar seekers and atmospheric skipping manoeuvres, it is nearly undetectable by conventional radar.
The ability to produce such missiles at scale, replace them during combat, and sustain production under wartime conditions is the true test of preparedness.
Drones and loitering munitions are being integrated into the military architecture as core assets rather than supplementary tools. Artificial intelligence is compressing the sensor-to-shooter loop, enabling faster battlefield decisions.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has emphasised that technological sovereignty and industrial self-reliance are national-security imperatives, not merely economic goals. Lessons from Operation Sindoor and global conflicts underline the need for precision-guided weapons, cyber integration, and unmanned systems.
The Indian Navy is expanding towards a 200-warship fleet by 2035, with new frigates, submarines, and aircraft carriers under construction.
This maritime revival aims to counter China’s 370-ship navy and Pakistan’s submarine fleet, ensuring dominance in the Indian Ocean Region. A $8.4 billion package is driving India’s ambition to become a top-five shipbuilding nation by 2047.
Industrial resilience is the decisive factor. Can India repair and upgrade critical systems during war? Can it sustain prolonged conflict without foreign production lines? Defence manufacturing hubs, such as the newly inaugurated NIBE Group facility in Shirdi producing 155 mm artillery shells, are part of the answer.
The facility reflects India’s determination to achieve self-reliance in ammunition production, ensuring the ability to fight and keep fighting.
Technology, mass, speed, and industrial resilience are the pillars of India’s preparedness. Military power is not just the ability to fight once. It is the ability to fight again tomorrow, and again the day after, without interruption. That is the real meaning of Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence.
