Canada And India Deepen Strategic Partnership Through High-Level Talks On Trade, Security And Investment

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, with discussions centred on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, security, energy, technology and people-to-people links. The meetings reflected the renewed momentum in relations between the two countries following recent diplomatic engagement.
Following her meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Anand said Canada and India have significant potential to build a more prosperous future together. She noted that their discussions focused on the strategic partnership between the two nations and opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment and security.
Anand highlighted that nearly eight decades of diplomatic relations have been reinforced by generations of families, students and entrepreneurs who have helped bring Canada and India closer together. She also pointed to recent high-level exchanges, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India earlier this year and the ongoing Team Canada Trade Mission.
In a separate statement, Anand said she was encouraged by the progress achieved since meeting Jaishankar in New Delhi a year ago. She cited advancements in trade negotiations and deeper collaboration in energy, innovation and security, while emphasising the growing importance of the bilateral relationship as the international order undergoes significant change.
She added that stronger Canada-India ties could contribute to a freer, more open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, while creating new economic opportunities for both countries. Anand stressed that the relationship is ultimately defined by what the two nations can accomplish together.
Jaishankar also held talks with his Canadian counterpart, reviewing developments in trade and investment, education, energy, defence and people-to-people exchanges. The two ministers additionally exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
The meetings took place against the backdrop of improving diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Ottawa after a period of strained relations.
Both governments have recently intensified efforts to rebuild cooperation through sustained political and economic dialogue.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a telephone conversation and agreed to build on the positive momentum in bilateral relations. Their discussions focused on trade, energy, technology, security and strengthening people-to-people connections.
India and Canada are also working towards concluding a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is expected to expand bilateral trade and investment opportunities. Complementing these efforts, Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu is leading a delegation of around 300 representatives to India to explore business opportunities across a range of key sectors.
