Make-In-India: Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar Highlights Indigenous Defence Communications During HTL Chennai Visit

Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar, AVSM, VSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army's Southern Command, recently visited HTL Limited, a subsidiary of HFCL Limited, at its manufacturing facility in Guindy, Chennai.
During the visit, the Army Commander was briefed on HTL's advanced optical fibre cable manufacturing capabilities and next-generation connectivity solutions that support secure military communications networks.
The visit highlighted the growing importance of indigenous technology development under the Government of India's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. These efforts are aimed at strengthening national self-reliance by reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical strategic technologies.
A significant focus of the engagement was the role of secure optical fibre infrastructure in safeguarding the Indian Army's communications backbone. Such networks are vital for the secure transmission of operational and strategic information across military formations.
Lt Gen Pushkar reviewed HTL's extensive 20-acre production facility and gained insights into the company's capability to manufacture optical fibre cables and passive connectivity solutions for both civilian and strategic applications.
The interaction underscored the increasing collaboration between the Armed Forces and India's domestic technology industry. Such partnerships are playing a crucial role in building resilient communications ecosystems capable of supporting modern defence requirements.
The visit also reinforced the importance of locally designed, engineered and manufactured communications equipment in mitigating supply-chain risks, enhancing security, and reducing vulnerabilities associated with external sourcing.
HTL, which operates advanced manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu, has expanded beyond telecommunications into specialised aerospace and defence connectivity solutions, supporting India's broader push towards indigenous capability development in critical sectors.
The engagement reflects the Indian Army's continued emphasis on leveraging domestic industrial expertise to strengthen secure communications, improve operational readiness and advance long-term defence self-sufficiency.
