India’s decision to acquire the Russian R-37M very-long-range air-to-air missile marks a significant shift in its aerial combat capabilities.

For years, the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fleet lacked the reach to challenge Chinese and Pakistani fighters armed with long-range missiles. That gap is now being bridged with the induction of a weapon analysts have dubbed the “AWACS killer.”

On 15 July 2026, New Delhi finalised a contract to purchase approximately 300 R-37M missiles, NATO reporting name AA-13 "Axehead", in a deal worth about US$1.2 billion.

These missiles will be integrated onto the Su-30MKI, the backbone of Indian air power, with deliveries expected within 12 to 18 months. While acknowledged as a stop-gap measure, the acquisition alters the strategic balance across the Himalayas and the Line of Control.

The R-37M is not designed for dogfights. It is a precision weapon intended to eliminate high-value airborne assets such as early-warning radar aircraft, aerial refuelling tankers, and electronic warfare platforms. By targeting these enablers, the missile effectively blinds and disrupts enemy fighter operations.

To achieve this, it employs a lofted trajectory, climbing into thinner air to conserve energy before diving onto its target. Russian sources claim ranges of up to 400 kilometres under ideal conditions, though from the Su-30MKI a more realistic effective range is around 350 kilometres. Its terminal velocity approaches Mach 6, leaving adversaries with only seconds to react.

Currently, the MiG-31BM interceptor is the primary launch platform for the R-37M. India will become one of the few nations to field the missile from a multirole fighter, the Su-30MKI. The missile itself is formidable, measuring 4.2 metres in length and weighing nearly 600 kilograms, with a 60-kilogram fragmentation warhead optimised for large aircraft.

Guidance is layered: inertial navigation based on the launch aircraft’s radar picture, mid-course updates via datalink, and an active radar seeker — the 9B-1103M family — that activates in the terminal phase, allowing the launch aircraft to disengage.

The missile’s effectiveness has already been demonstrated in Russia’s war in Ukraine, where R-37M-armed interceptors have forced Ukrainian pilots to fly low and remain cautious, striking targets from ranges beyond retaliation. India has clearly drawn lessons from these engagements.

The timing of the purchase is deliberate. Following clashes with Pakistan in Operation Sindoor and China’s rapid deployment of long-range missiles such as the PL-15 and PL-17, the Indian Air Force found itself disadvantaged in the critical metric of modern aerial warfare: who can shoot first from the farthest distance.

Indigenous solutions like the Astra MK-2 and MK-3 are under development but not yet fully mature. The R-37M provides an immediate capability, buying time until domestic programs reach operational readiness.

Ironically, it is a Russian solution to a problem partly created by Russian-supplied technology now in the hands of India’s adversaries.

For the Su-30MKI, a platform Indian pilots know intimately, the integration of the R-37M transforms its role. Already a formidable dogfighter, the aircraft will now be able to threaten targets up to 300 kilometres away, a reach that fundamentally alters the aerial equation in South Asia.

In a region where air dominance is increasingly defined by missile range, India’s acquisition of the R-37M is both a tactical and strategic leap.
