From Aryabhata To Gaganyaan: India Invites Russian Firms To Invest In Space Innovation

India has extended a formal invitation to Russian companies to invest in its rapidly growing and innovative space sector, highlighting lucrative schemes and a conducive atmosphere created by the Government of India to foster such investments.
This call was made by Ambassador Vinay Kumar during the Indian Embassy’s event marking the second National Space Day in Moscow on August 26, 2025, held to commemorate the first anniversary of the Pragyan Rover's successful landing on the Moon as part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
Ambassador Kumar underscored the longstanding and rich history of space cooperation between India and Russia, recalling landmark moments such as the launch of Aryabhata, India's first satellite, on a Soviet rocket in 1975, and astronaut Rakesh Sharma's Soyuz T-11 mission in 1984.
Additionally, he highlighted the current collaborative efforts between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Russia's Roscosmos in the development of India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight program. The event was attended by officials and experts from Roscosmos, symbolising the ongoing partnership and mutual interest in advancing space technology and exploration.
Kumar also reflected on the deep cultural and scientific roots of space observation in India, tracing back to ancient scholars like Aryabhata, who studied celestial movements and their impact on human life. He emphasised how space has transitioned from a traditional subject of interest to a pivotal part of everyday life through applications in communication and navigation.
The program additionally featured space-themed cultural performances by students of the Embassy, celebrating India’s achievements and inspiring interest in space science and technology among the younger generation.
This call for enhanced cooperation and investment signifies India’s ambition to not only nurture its domestic space industry but also to integrate with global partners, leveraging combined expertise and innovation to accelerate space ventures.
This growing market in India, bolstered by successful missions like Chandrayaan-3, presents attractive opportunities for Russian firms to engage in the country’s expanding space ecosystem while continuing the longstanding partnership between the two nations in space exploration and technology development.
