The Indian Army’s Simulator Development Division has issued a requirement for the design and development of a Multi-Utility Unmanned Ground Vehicle (MU-UGV), creating a significant opportunity for India’s defence industry to advance indigenous unmanned systems capabilities.

The proposed platform is intended to support the safe handling, relocation and disposal of unexploded ordnance, helping to reduce risks faced by personnel during explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operations.

According to the requirement, the MU-UGV will incorporate a tracked mobile base to provide mobility across challenging terrain. The vehicle will also be equipped with a robotic arm capable of manipulating and moving hazardous objects during disposal missions.

A multi-camera perception system will form a key part of the platform, providing enhanced situational awareness and enabling operators to assess threats from a secure distance. The system will be controlled through a secure remote-control station, allowing personnel to conduct sensitive operations while remaining outside danger zones.

The program reflects the Indian Army’s continued emphasis on adopting advanced unmanned and robotic technologies to improve operational safety, efficiency and mission effectiveness. Such systems are increasingly being employed worldwide for bomb disposal, reconnaissance and other high-risk military tasks.

Beyond domestic requirements, the MU-UGV is also being considered for export to the Philippines. The export potential highlights growing international interest in Indian-developed defence technologies and aligns with India’s broader push to expand defence exports while strengthening the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

For Indian defence manufacturers, the project offers an opportunity to develop advanced robotic and autonomous capabilities, support military modernisation efforts and enhance India’s position in the global defence market through the delivery of specialised unmanned ground systems.
