'India Practices Policy of Zero Tolerance Against Terrorism,' Says EAM Jaishankar During Meeting With UK Foreign Secretary Lammy

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during his meeting with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy in New Delhi on June 7, 2025, reaffirmed India's unwavering policy of zero tolerance against terrorism. Jaishankar expressed gratitude to the UK government for its strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and highlighted the importance of international solidarity in combating terrorism.
He emphasised that India expects its global partners to fully understand and respect this zero-tolerance stance, making it clear that the country will never accept any equivalence drawn between perpetrators of terrorism and their victims.
The talks took place amid heightened concerns in India regarding some countries making comparisons between India and Pakistan following recent military tensions. Jaishankar reiterated that India rejects any such parity, especially in the context of terrorism, and underscored the need for a clear distinction between those who commit acts of terror and those who suffer from them.
The meeting also covered the broader strategic partnership between India and the UK, including discussions on cross-border terrorism, particularly emanating from Pakistan. The UK had previously engaged with both India and Pakistan to encourage de-escalation during their recent conflict. Jaishankar also acknowledged the progress in bilateral relations, citing the recent conclusion of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement and the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention as significant milestones.
In the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, an All-Party Delegation from India visited the UK to brief officials on the incident and India's subsequent response through Operation Sindoor. This operation, highlighted by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, involved targeted strikes against terror camps and was presented as a demonstration of India's resolve under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership to uproot terrorism from its roots.
Additionally, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly condemned the Pahalgam attack, describing it as "utterly devastating" and expressing solidarity with the victims and the people of India. The ongoing India-UK dialogue aims to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with a focus on economic and migration issues alongside security cooperation.
Overall, the discussions underscored India's consistent and robust approach to counter-terrorism, its expectation of unequivocal support from international partners, and the ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties with the UK in multiple domains.
