German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul commenced a two-day official visit to India from September 2 to September 3, 2025, underscoring India as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region and an essential global player.

He emphasised that Germany and India share close political, economic, and cultural ties, and that the expansion of their strategic partnership holds immense potential. This partnership spans areas such as security cooperation, innovation, technology, and skilled labour recruitment.

Wadephul highlighted India's role as the world's most populous country and largest democracy, whose voice resonates beyond the Indo-Pacific region, shaping the international order of this century.

The German Foreign Office described India and Germany as natural democratic partners aiming to preserve the rules-based international order amid complex geopolitical challenges.

During his visit, Wadephul began in Bengaluru, India's innovation and technology hub, where he toured the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to explore scientific and technological cooperation opportunities.

He also engaged with initiatives around digitisation, mobility, and the recruitment of highly qualified skilled workers, reflecting Germany’s interest in leveraging India's innovation ecosystem and workforce.

Subsequently, in New Delhi, Wadephul held high-level meetings with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss broad cooperation including trade, green energy, digital transformation, security, and global governance.

The visit marks an important step in further deepening the 25-year-old strategic partnership between the two democracies, which has steadily evolved with increasing collaboration in economic, technological, and security domains.

Both sides have reiterated their commitment to expanding bilateral relations in areas such as artificial intelligence, sustainability, defence, and talent mobility, recognising the geopolitical and economic challenges facing the world today.

Wadephul’s visit builds on recent engagements, including the External Affairs Minister of India’s Berlin visit earlier in 2025, illustrating a shared vision of enhanced collaboration between Germany and India as key strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

This visit reflects Germany’s strategic intent to partner closely with India in shaping a stable, rules-based international order in an era marked by geopolitical uncertainty, while also boosting economic ties and technological cooperation between the two nations.

Wadephul’s statements and itinerary underline the significant promise this bilateral partnership holds for advancing security, innovation, and skilled labour exchange in the years ahead.
