Singapore Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong arrived in New Delhi on September 2, 2025, for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The visit comes at a historic juncture, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore, as well as Singapore’s 60th year of independence (SG60).

This marks Prime Minister Wong’s inaugural visit to India since assuming office, underscoring the importance his administration attaches to strengthening ties with India, a key partner in ASEAN and a pivotal country in the Indo-Pacific.

During his visit, Prime Minister Wong is scheduled to call on President Droupadi Murmu and hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will also host him for a Banquet Lunch.

These high-level engagements are expected to deepen political trust, reinforce strategic cooperation, and explore new avenues of bilateral collaboration.

In addition to his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Wong will receive separate calls by several senior Indian ministers, including Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers Jagat Prakash Nadda, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

These ministerial interactions reflect the wide-ranging agenda between India and Singapore, covering health, economic cooperation, education, security, and foreign policy.

As part of his symbolic engagements, Prime Minister Wong is scheduled to visit Raj Ghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, showcasing Singapore’s respect for India’s founding leaders and shared democratic values.

Beyond official meetings, he will interact with members of the Singaporean diaspora at a special reception in Delhi commemorating both SG60 and the 60th anniversary of bilateral ties. Diaspora engagement remains a crucial element of Singapore’s diplomacy, and this event reinforces people-to-people connections, which underpin the bilateral relationship.

Wong will also hold a closed-door round table with prominent Indian business leaders, aimed at fostering investments, trade partnerships, and technology collaboration between the two nations.

Accompanying Prime Minister Wong is a high-level delegation including Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Acting Minister for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Finance Jeffrey Siow, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade & Industry Gan Siow Huang, as well as senior officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Digital Development and Information.

The presence of such a comprehensive delegation highlights the visit’s focus on multi-dimensional cooperation — encompassing trade, finance, digital innovation, transportation, education, and security. Meanwhile, in Wong’s absence, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam is serving as Singapore’s Acting Prime Minister.

This visit builds upon Prime Minister Modi’s September 2024 visit to Singapore, during which bilateral relations were elevated to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).

The CSP framework expands cooperation to emerging areas such as digital economy, green technology, defence collaboration, cybersecurity, and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, making Singapore one of India’s closest partners in ASEAN.

Moreover, Singapore continues to play a key role in India’s “Act East” Policy as both countries jointly work to enhance connectivity, boost economic linkages, strengthen regional platforms like ASEAN-led mechanisms, and uphold a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific.

By blending high-level political dialogue, ministerial consultations, business engagement, and people-to-people interactions, Prime Minister Wong’s India visit is set to reinforce the bedrock of trust and mutual respect on which the bilateral relationship stands.

It is also expected to generate momentum for collaboration in new-age sectors such as digital innovation, clean energy, and financial technology, aligning with both nations’ broader developmental goals and shared vision for regional prosperity and stability.
