India’s Akashteer stands out globally as the only system capable of integrating both Russian and Western-origin weapons into a unified combat network, operating with an ultra-low latency of just 2–3 milliseconds.

This achievement represents a technological leap in automated air defence command and control, positioning India as a leader in digital battlefield integration.

India’s Akashteer is a fully automated, AI-enabled Air Defence Control and Reporting System developed by Bharat Electronics Limited in collaboration with DRDO and ISRO.

It functions as the digital backbone of the Indian Army’s air defence network, designed to manage low-level airspace and coordinate ground-based weaponry. Its primary role is to act as a centralised command nexus that drastically reduces response times in combat scenarios.

The system’s most remarkable capability is its cross-platform integration. Akashteer synthesises data from diverse radar systems, sensors, and weapon platforms, seamlessly merging Russian-origin assets such as Schilka, OSA-AK, Strela, and Igla with Western-origin systems and indigenous Indian solutions like Akash SAMs and counter-UAS technologies. This interoperability is unique worldwide, enabling a unified combat picture across heterogeneous arsenals.

Akashteer’s ultra-low latency of 2–3 milliseconds ensures near-instantaneous threat detection, tracking, and weapon assignment.

By automating these processes, it eliminates human-delay loops, which are critical in high-stress combat environments where seconds can determine survival.

This latency advantage allows the system to counter modern aerial threats such as loitering munitions, drone swarms, and cruise missiles with precision.

The system has already proven itself in real-world deployments. During Operation Sindoor, Akashteer coordinated short-range air defence units along the western border, successfully neutralising incoming aerial threats. Its ability to maintain a real-time, shared airspace picture across all connected control rooms and batteries significantly reduces the risk of fratricide while maximising interception efficiency.

Akashteer also integrates with the Indian Air Force’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), creating a unified national air defence grid.

This interoperability ensures that data from long-range Air Force radars, Army sensors, and naval tracking systems converge into a continuous, real-time air situation picture. Such integration eliminates the “fog of war” and enables commanders to make rapid, informed decisions.

Beyond conventional threats, Akashteer is being progressively linked with counter-UAS solutions, including DRDO’s anti-drone systems and iDEX-funded Start-Up innovations. This ensures adaptability against evolving drone warfare tactics, particularly low-and-slow threats that previously exploited gaps in manual sensor fusion.

Strategically, Akashteer represents India’s ambition to build indigenous defence programs that rival global standards.

It is not a new weapon but a command-and-control layer that transforms existing assets into a cohesive, digitised shield.

By collapsing the decision loop and automating sensor fusion, it addresses vulnerabilities that have plagued air defence forces worldwide since the Yom Kippur War.
