Why Short‑Range Ballistic Missiles Are The New Weapon Of Choice And How India’s Pralay Stands Out

Short‑range ballistic missiles have become defining weapons of modern conflict. Russia’s use of the Iskander‑M against Ukraine and Iran’s missile strikes on Israel have demonstrated their growing importance, Times of India reported.
Their speed, manoeuvrability and compressed flight profiles make them extremely difficult to intercept, often overwhelming even advanced defence systems.
Unlike longer‑range missiles that follow predictable arcs, short‑range systems spend very little time in the exo‑atmospheric phase. This leaves defenders with only seconds to react. Quasi‑ballistic designs add further complexity by altering course during terminal approach, defeating interceptors calibrated for fixed trajectories.
India’s Pralay missile stands out in this evolving landscape. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization, Pralay is a cannisterised, road‑mobile tactical ballistic missile. It has a range of 150 to 500 kilometres and can carry payloads between 350 and 1,000 kilograms.
These payloads include fragmentation, penetration and runway‑denial warheads, making it versatile against different categories of high‑value targets.
Pralay is powered by solid fuel, ensuring rapid launch readiness and operational reliability. It is capable of performing terminal manoeuvres, placing it firmly in the quasi‑ballistic class alongside Russia’s Iskander and China’s Dongfeng‑12. This manoeuvrability makes interception extremely difficult, even for advanced air defence systems.
The missile is slated for induction into India’s Integrated Rocket Force. This marks a significant step in India’s effort to strengthen its conventional deterrence posture. By offering a flexible, conventionally armed strike option outside nuclear constraints, Pralay provides India with escalation control in conflict scenarios.
Pralay’s road‑mobile design enhances survivability and deployment flexibility. Its cannisterised configuration allows for quick transport and launch, reducing vulnerability to pre‑emptive strikes. The missile’s ability to deliver precise strikes against radar sites, communication hubs, command centres and airfields makes it a powerful tactical weapon.
The emergence of Pralay reflects the changing character of modern warfare. Conventional ballistic missiles are increasingly required to deliver rapid, accurate and hard‑to‑intercept strikes.
India’s military planners recognised this need and developed Pralay to complement existing assets such as BrahMos and Nirbhay, thereby creating a layered strike capability across different ranges and speeds.
Pralay’s induction will give India’s armed forces a credible option to conduct deep strikes while staying below the nuclear threshold.
This capability is particularly relevant in the regional security environment, where precision targeting and rapid escalation control are critical. It positions India alongside other major powers that have invested heavily in quasi‑ballistic missile systems.
