India and Japan are set to conduct the bilateral air exercise ‘Veer Guardian’ at Jodhpur from 9 to 22 September.

The Indian Air Force will showcase its frontline combat aircraft, including the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, the Su-30MKI and the Rafale. The Japan Air Self Defence Force will contribute its F-2A fighter aircraft to the exercise.

Officials confirmed that the fourteen-day exercise will involve advanced operational missions. Air warriors from both nations will engage in extensive professional interactions, strengthening tactical skills and operational understanding.

The Ministry of Defence stated that the Indian Air Force and the Japan Air Self Defence Force will conduct the exercise at Air Force Station Jodhpur. The participation of diverse aircraft platforms highlights the growing depth of cooperation between the two nations.

The program integrates mission planning conferences and subject matter expert exchanges. Personnel will also interact on engineering aspects and aerospace safety. These engagements are designed to foster deep operational synergy between the two air forces.

The Ministry emphasised that Exercise ‘Veer Guardian’ reflects a deepening strategic partnership between India and Japan. It enhances tactical proficiency and aerospace operational synergy, while reaffirming the longstanding bonds of friendship and strategic cooperation.

Japan’s F-2A fighter aircraft, co-developed with Lockheed Martin and based on the F-16 design, brings unique tactical value to the exercise. Its participation allows the Indian Air Force to gain exposure to an aircraft configuration similar to the F-16s operated by Pakistan, thereby adding strategic depth to India’s preparedness.

The exercise also builds upon the first edition of Veer Guardian held in 2023, which marked the beginning of bilateral air combat drills between India and Japan. The continuation of this program demonstrates the sustained commitment of both nations to defence collaboration.

The arrival of Japanese aircraft and personnel at Jodhpur underscores the seriousness of the engagement.

Approximately 110 members from the Japan Air Self Defence Force are expected to participate, alongside three F-2A fighters from the 8th Air Wing based at Tsuiki Air Base.

This exercise is not only a tactical training opportunity but also a strategic signal of Indo-Japanese defence alignment. It reinforces the shared vision of maintaining regional stability and strengthening aerospace cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
