'Glad To Celebrate 60 Years of Close And Enduring Friendship With India': Singapore PM Wong

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong embarked on his first official visit to India from September 2 to 4, 2025, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore.
This visit, at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was a significant milestone celebrating six decades of enduring friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
During his visit, PM Wong expressed heartfelt gratitude to PM Modi for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation, highlighting the remarkable progress India has made under Modi’s leadership, including its position as the world's fourth-largest economy.
The two leaders held bilateral talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, where they discussed expanding cooperation in key and emerging sectors such as space technology, green energy, digital innovation, advanced manufacturing, connectivity, and skill development.
Singapore's strategic role as India's largest foreign investor was underscored, accounting for around a quarter of India’s foreign direct investment inflows. The relationship has recently been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, setting the stage for deepened collaboration. Among the key highlights of the visit was the joint inauguration of the JN Port PSA Mumbai Terminal (BMCT) Phase-II, showcasing Singapore’s substantial investment in India’s infrastructure.
Further to economic ties, both leaders reaffirmed the importance of people-to-people connections, agreeing to enhance exchanges including through civil service cooperation. PM Wong also met with Indian dignitaries, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and visited Raj Ghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. Special cultural receptions and engagements with overseas Singaporeans living in India marked the warm, multifaceted engagement.
The visit was positioned as a "productive start" that reinforced the longstanding friendship and set a forward-looking agenda to expand bilateral trade, investment, technological collaboration, and regional and global cooperation between India and Singapore as they advance their comprehensive strategic partnership.
