Nepal Congress MP Files FIR Against Ex PM Oli

Nepal Congress MP Abhishek Pratap Shah filed an FIR against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at New Baneshwor Police through the Chief District Officer, Dilkumar Tamang of Kapilvastu.
The FIR filing follows massive protests by Nepal’s Generation Z, triggered by the government's ban on social media platforms and widespread allegations of corruption linked to Oli's administration, eventually forcing his resignation.
Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice and noted anti-corruption advocate, was sworn in as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister on September 12, becoming the country’s first female PM. Her appointment came after intense political turmoil marked by deadly Gen Z protests that led to the dissolution of the lower House of Parliament and the announcement of fresh elections scheduled for March 21, 2026. The appointment was facilitated by consultations involving President Ramchandra Paudel, protest leaders, and security officials.
The Gen Z protests began with the government’s ban on 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, X, YouTube, and others, as a response to alleged non-compliance with stringent registration rules and an effort to regulate digital services tax.
However, the ban ignited outrage, especially among young Nepalis frustrated with endemic corruption, nepotism, and economic hardships. Violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement resulted in over 50 deaths and widespread injuries. After lifting the social media ban, large-scale demonstrations continued until Oli’s resignation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sushila Karki on her historic appointment, praising it as a shining example of women’s empowerment and expressing confidence in her ability to steer Nepal toward peace, stability, and prosperity. Modi also lauded Nepali youth for upholding democratic values during the unrest and their efforts to restore normalcy, including community initiatives such as cleaning streets post-protests. He reiterated India’s close friendship with Nepal and its support for Nepal’s democratic transition.
Interim PM Sushila Karki has actively engaged with injured protesters and has been seen visiting hospitals in Kathmandu, emphasizing reconciliation and healing. Karki’s government is tasked with managing the political transition and organizing elections within six months to stabilize Nepal’s prolonged political crisis following Oli’s resignation amid accusations of inertia, corruption, and a lack of political inclusivity.
