PM Modi Discusses Bilateral Cooperation In 'Excellent' Meeting With Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an excellent bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, on September 1, 2025.
During their discussions, both leaders focused on strengthening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership that forms a cornerstone of regional and global stability. The topics ranged widely, reflecting the robust and multifaceted relationship between India and Russia.
Modi highlighted the depth of cooperation across sectors such as trade, fertilisers, space, security, and culture, and the leaders expressed satisfaction with the continuous growth in these domains.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to examining the situation in Ukraine. The dialogue covered the latest developments concerning the ongoing conflict, with Prime Minister Modi reiterating India’s support for recent diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the crisis.
He emphasised the urgency of expediting a cessation of hostilities and working toward a durable peace settlement. Modi’s stance underscored India’s consistent advocacy for dialogue and peaceful resolution, as well as its desire to see the region return to stability through constructive engagement.
Economic, financial, and energy cooperation were central to bilateral discussions. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the sustained growth in bilateral ties in these areas, reviewing joint endeavors and ongoing collaborations.
The Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed that the talks further bolstered the strategic partnership, not only reflecting on economic cooperation but also signalling future expansion into sectors vital for both countries.
In addition to bilateral matters, the regional and global context of the meeting was significant. Modi and Putin exchanged views on a range of international developments, reaffirming mutual support for initiatives that foster peace and stability across the region.
The reaffirmation of their commitment to the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership demonstrated India and Russia’s intent to remain central players in global diplomacy and the evolving security landscape of Eurasia.
Concluding the meeting, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to President Putin to visit India for the 23rd Annual Summit later in the year, signaling continued momentum in high-level engagement.
The SCO Summit itself, held on August 31 and September 1, 2025, convened several world leaders and provided an effective platform for India and Russia to reinforce strategic priorities and deepen their bilateral relationship in an increasingly multipolar world.
