Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasised the pivotal role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a unifying platform for the countries of the Global South and East during his bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin, China on September 1, 2025.

Putin highlighted the multifaceted and longstanding relationship between India and Russia, noting that December 21, 2025, marks the 15th anniversary of the elevation of bilateral ties to a 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.'

The ongoing collaboration between both nations spans political, economic, technological, and strategic domains, reflecting mutual respect and shared interests in regional stability and development.

Putin expressed deep satisfaction over the meeting with Modi, underscoring that the SCO not only enhances strategic cooperation but also fosters unity among developing nations, whose perspectives have traditionally been sidelined by Eurocentric global frameworks.

According to Putin, the organisation's structure and operational ethos enable the member states to pursue common objectives, particularly in areas of economic growth, security integration, and cultural rapprochement.

SCO dialogue, he argued, lays the groundwork for establishing a new Eurasian security system, heralding the shift from outdated Eurocentric and Euro-Atlantic security models toward a more inclusive and multipolar alternative.

In the context of global issues, especially the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Putin publicly appreciated proactive diplomatic efforts by India and China aimed at resolving the war through peaceful means.

He countered the narrative promoted by White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro, who had controversially accused India of 'funding' the Russia-Ukraine war and acting as a 'laundromat for the Kremlin,' using these claims to justify stringent 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports.

Navarro’s assertion that India’s actions undermine American economic interests—resulting in job losses, depressed wages, and burdening taxpayers—was robustly rejected by Putin, who instead placed the origins of the crisis in Ukraine on western support for the 2014 Kyiv coup d'etat.

Putin's address at the 25th SCO Heads of State Council summit further clarified Russia's stance on global and regional security, reaffirming the importance of dialogue within frameworks such as the SCO in shaping future security architectures.

He presented the SCO as an effective vehicle for collective policymaking that champions the sovereignty and developmental goals of its diverse membership, and as a critical forum for recalibrating power balances away from entrenched western alliances.

The meeting with Modi is expected to significantly strengthen Indo-Russian relations, promoting joint efforts to address regional challenges, stimulate economic opportunities, and support peace-building initiatives, all within the context of an expanding Eurasian and Global South cooperation network.
