The United States Air Force's forthcoming F-47, designated as the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) stealth fighter, represents a pivotal advancement in sixth-generation aviation technology. 

General David Allvin, the former Chief of the Air Staff, has described it as the cornerstone platform that, alongside a suite of networked systems, will secure aerial dominance well into the future. This aircraft emerges amid intensifying global rivalries, particularly in the vast expanse of the Indo-Pacific theatre.

In a keynote address at the Air and Space Forces’ Air, Space and Cyber Conference earlier this year, Allvin highlighted the program's rapid progress. After extensive testing encompassing hundreds of flight hours and thousands of man-years in laboratories, the President formally announced the F-47. The Air Force remains committed to achieving the first flight by 2028, with manufacturing of the initial prototype already underway in the months following the revelation.

Allvin has stressed the imperative of speed, noting adversaries like China show no signs of abatement. Platforms such as the J-20, J-35 variants, and emerging J-36 or J-50 threaten to erode US qualitative edges unless the F-47 delivers on schedule. Delays could jeopardise air superiority in peer-level confrontations.

The second unresolved question revolves around the F-47's role within this ecosystem. Allvin cautions against platform-centric fixation, advocating a systems-over-platforms paradigm. No single jet constitutes a "magic bullet"; efficacy derives from networked lethality, where the F-47 serves as the penetrating core augmented by drones, sensors, and cyber elements.

This approach aligns with the Air Force's three-layer fighter masterplan, layering the F-47 alongside upgraded F-22s, "Super" variants, and prolific F-35s. It promises scalable responses to threats, from deep strikes against high-value targets to distributed operations denying enemy access.

The Air Force posits that smaller quantities of premium jets, paired with cheaper attritable systems, yield better value than mass-producing vulnerable fourth- or fifth-generation platforms.

Its 1,000+ nautical mile combat radius enables strikes from standoff distances, preserving stealthy assets from dense integrated air defences.

Sustainability poses another hurdle. High costs necessitate export potential or allied co-production, though sixth-generation sensitivities may restrict sharing. European programs like FCAS risk delays, potentially accelerating F-47 deployments to NATO flanks.

Allvin's vision extends beyond hardware: resilient basing disperses assets across austere sites, while survivable tankers evade threats. Space-based assets furnish persistent targeting, weaving the F-47 into a resilient web defying single-point failures.
