China has steadily increased production of the J-16 fighter, with estimates suggesting between seventy and one hundred aircraft are being built each year.

Deliveries have already crossed four hundred and fifty units by 2025, making the J-16 the backbone of China’s heavy fighter fleet. Analysts believe the aircraft will remain in frontline service well beyond 2050, with total numbers likely surpassing six hundred to seven hundred units. Continuous upgrades, including electronic warfare variants such as the J-16D, will ensure the type remains relevant alongside stealthier J-20s and future sixth-generation programs.

The comparison between India’s TEJAS MK-1 and MK-1A with Pakistan’s JF-17 is unavoidable. The TEJAS, with its forty-five percent composite structure, lightweight design, and reduced radar signature, is technically superior in agility, avionics, and payload capacity.

It carries advanced radars such as the Uttam AESA and EL/M-2052, and can deploy indigenous weapons like the Astra beyond-visual-range missile. The JF-17 Block-III, however, has an advantage in affordability and access to long-range Chinese missiles such as the PL-15E.

While the TEJAS MK-1A is more advanced in design and performance, the JF-17 remains a cost-effective solution for Pakistan, especially when paired with the F-16 and J-10C.

The TEJAS MK-2 is projected to be broadly comparable to the F-16 Block-70 and China’s J-10C. It will feature a payload of around six and a half tonnes, advanced Uttam AESA radar, and integration with weapons such as ASTRA MK-2, Meteor, BrahMos-NG, and Rudram-II.

The F-16 Block 70 remains the most combat-proven platform, with global integration and versatile weapons compatibility.

The J-10C, meanwhile, is formidable in long-range combat with the PL-15 missile, which has a reach of up to two hundred and fifty kilometres. Each platform has distinct strengths, but the TEJAS MK-2 offers India indigenous autonomy and advanced weapons integration, making it strategically significant.

The broader context is critical. Comparing TEJAS MK-1 or MK-2 with JF-17, F-16, or J-10C is valid for tactical balance, but China’s J-20 fleet and upcoming sixth-generation fighters are in a different category altogether. India’s challenge lies not only in capability but in timely induction.

Nine years after initial orders, the TEJAS MK-1A has yet to enter squadron service, and the MK-2 prototype has not rolled out. By the mid-2030s, the TEJAS MK-2 could be a superb Gen 4.5 platform, but regional air power has already shifted dramatically. China is fielding hundreds of J-20s, while Pakistan has modernised with JF-17 Block III and J-10C.

The hope and belief placed in the TEJAS must now be weighed against the hard reality of delays. The aircraft remains a gorgeous little jet with immense potential, but the question is whether it has missed the boat in the face of rapidly changing air power dynamics in the region.

The TEJAS MK-2 may yet prove to be a superb platform, but India must confront the truth that air dominance is already being reshaped by adversaries who have moved faster and fielded more advanced systems.
