US Navy Unveils AIM‑424 Malice Long‑Range Air‑To‑Air Missile

The US Navy has officially unveiled the AIM‑424 Malice, a next‑generation long‑range air‑to‑air missile developed by Raytheon, capable of striking targets at distances exceeding 465 kilometres (290 miles).
It was showcased at the Tailhook symposium in Reno, Nevada, and is intended to provide US forces with decisive fleet air defence and extended engagement capability against advanced aerial threats.
The AIM‑424 Malice is designed with dimensions similar to the AIM‑120 AMRAAM, enabling it to be carried internally by stealth fighters such as the F‑35 and F‑22.
Despite its comparable size, the missile is significantly heavier, weighing around 1,500 pounds (around 680 Kgs), and uses a two‑stage solid‑propellant rocket motor to achieve its extended range. Its blast‑fragmentation warhead is optimised for destroying high‑value airborne targets.
The missile’s range of more than 250 nautical miles (465 km) places it among the longest‑range air‑to‑air weapons currently under development.
This capability allows aircraft to engage critical assets such as airborne command‑and‑control platforms and aerial refuelling tankers from stand‑off distances, thereby reducing exposure to hostile air defences.
The missile’s aerodynamic design, including specialised fins and strakes, ensures manoeuvrability even at extended ranges, allowing it to target fighter‑sized aircraft as well.
The unveiling of the Malice comes amid heightened global interest in long‑range air‑to‑air systems. Last year’s India‑Pakistan confrontation highlighted the operational use of Chinese‑made missiles with ranges of around 300 km.
The Malice’s reach surpasses these figures, reinforcing US efforts to maintain air superiority against peer adversaries.
Analysts such as Peter Layton have suggested that the missile is intended primarily for fleet air defence, countering threats such as Chinese bombers armed with long‑range anti‑ship cruise missiles.
Operational use of such a missile requires advanced detection and tracking systems capable of identifying targets far beyond conventional engagement ranges.
Guidance systems must sustain lock over extended distances, while adversary aircraft may attempt evasive manoeuvres to escape interception. The Malice’s integration with stealth aircraft ensures that it can be deployed effectively in contested environments.
The Pentagon has long pursued extended‑range air‑to‑air weapons. Historically, the AIM‑54 Phoenix carried by the F‑14 Tomcat provided similar long‑range capability before its retirement.
More recently, Lockheed Martin has been awarded $1 billion to produce the AIM‑260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, while the Navy has fielded the AIM‑174B, an air‑to‑air adaptation of the SM‑6 missile with a range exceeding 400 km. The Malice complements these systems, forming part of a layered approach to long‑range aerial combat.
Raytheon’s development of the AIM‑424 Malice is linked to earlier classified efforts under the Long‑Range Engagement Weapon program, first disclosed in 2017. These initiatives sought to provide stealth fighters with internal carriage missiles capable of defeating advanced threats at extended ranges.
The Malice is now undergoing flight testing, with photographs showing F/A‑18E Super Hornets carrying multiple rounds during evaluation.
The US Navy has not yet disclosed when the AIM‑424 Malice will enter operational service. However, its unveiling signals a major step in strengthening US airpower for high‑end conflict scenarios, particularly in the Indo‑Pacific theatre where adversaries are fielding increasingly long‑range strike systems.
The missile is designed for use across fourth, fifth, and future sixth‑generation platforms, ensuring relevance for decades to come.
