CSIR-CSIO Transfers Indigenous Su-30MKI HUD Technology To BEL To Strengthen Aerospace Self-Reliance

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIR-CSIO) has transferred the technology for the Optical Module and Beam Combiner Assembly used in the Head-Up Display (HUD) system of Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Panchkula.
The transfer marks another step in India's drive towards greater self-reliance in critical aerospace and military technologies. It also expands the domestic industrial base for advanced avionics and optical subsystems used in frontline combat aircraft.
The Optical Module and Beam Combiner Assembly is a vital part of a fighter aircraft's HUD. The system projects key flight, navigation and weapon information directly into the pilot's field of view, allowing critical data to be monitored without diverting attention from the outside environment.
Within the HUD architecture, the optical module manages the display's optical path, while the beam combiner integrates the projected information into the pilot's forward vision without obstructing situational awareness.
By transferring the technology to BEL's Panchkula facility, CSIR-CSIO is enabling the indigenous production and integration of a critical cockpit subsystem that has traditionally relied on specialised aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
BEL is already a major supplier of avionics, radar systems, electronic warfare equipment and other mission-critical technologies for India's armed forces. The addition of this indigenous HUD technology is expected to further strengthen its aerospace portfolio.
The development supports ongoing modernisation efforts for the Indian Air Force's Su-30 fleet, which continues to receive upgrades across avionics, cockpit systems, sensors and other mission equipment.
Indigenous production of critical subsystems can reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, improve long-term maintenance support and provide greater flexibility for future upgrades.
The technology transfer also highlights CSIR-CSIO's growing role in translating laboratory-developed innovations into deployable defence products through partnerships with Indian industry.
The move reinforces the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by promoting domestic manufacture of advanced military technologies and strengthening India's capabilities in high-end aerospace systems.
