'Make In India, Make For The World': PM Modi Says India Is Springboard For Japanese Business To Global South

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the India-Japan Economic Forum held in Tokyo on August 29, 2025, emphasized India as a "powerhouse of talent" and pitched for a robust partnership with Japan under the slogan "Make in India, Make for the World."
He highlighted India's rapid growth as the world's fastest growing economy, on path to become the third largest globally, and called on Japanese businesses to invest in India's manufacturing, technology, innovation, green energy, and skill development sectors.
PM Modi underscored the strong collaboration in manufacturing and the auto sector between the two countries and suggested expanding this success to batteries, robotics, semiconductors, shipbuilding, and nuclear energy. The partnership is strategic and economically sound, serving as a springboard for Japanese business to the Global South, especially contributing to the development of Africa.
He announced that Japanese companies have invested USD 13 billion in India over the past two years and expressed optimism as 80% of Japanese companies in India want to expand and 75% are already profitable. Stressing India’s skilled workforce, PM Modi proposed training Indian talent in the Japanese language and skills to create a Japan-ready workforce for global requirements, advocating for shared workforce and prosperity.
In the green energy sector, India aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030 and 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047. PM Modi called for collaboration with Japan in solar cells, green hydrogen, and clean energy, leveraging joint credit mechanisms. Infrastructure cooperation is advancing with projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail.
The two countries also set an ambitious target for Japanese investment in India at 10 trillion yen (around USD 68 billion) over the next decade, focusing on strengthening ties between small and medium enterprises (SMEs), start-ups, and high-tech sectors like AI, semiconductors, and clean energy. This roadmap aims to deepen human resource exchanges, with plans to encourage exchange of 500,000 people from various sectors and significant contributions from Indian skilled workers to Japan’s economy.
India and Japan reaffirmed their energy partnership at a ministerial-level dialogue, focusing on energy security, clean energy transition, and innovations in hydrogen, renewables, carbon capture, and biofuels. The partnership is seen as pivotal for secure, resilient, and sustainable energy systems in the Indo-Pacific region.
PM Modi's address framed India as a dynamic, stable, and promising investment destination. He envisioned India-Japan collaboration as a catalyst for innovation, industrial growth, and shaping an Asian century defined by stability, growth, and prosperity, with a comprehensive strategic partnership that extends beyond bilateral interests to global development, especially in the Global South.
