India, Germany Discuss Strengthening Trade Facilitation, Market Access

India and Germany recently held significant discussions to strengthen trade facilitation, regulatory frameworks, and market access between the two countries. On September 3, 2025, India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal co-chaired a meeting with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and business delegations from both nations in New Delhi.
The meeting explored avenues of collaboration in defence, space, innovation, and the automobile sector, highlighting the vast potential of the India-Germany partnership. This visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, a relationship that has deepened over the years through shared democratic values, economic ties, and global cooperation.
Germany reaffirmed its strong commitment to finalising the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) as soon as possible, with both sides aiming to conclude the ambitious FTA by the end of 2025.
The finalisation of this agreement is expected to enhance bilateral trade significantly. India counts on Germany’s support to expedite the FTA negotiations with the EU, emphasising its importance for deeper economic integration and market access.
Germany sees India as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region and globally, with the bilateral relationship rooted in political, economic, and cultural ties. Key pillars of this partnership include security cooperation, technological innovation, and skilled workforce recruitment.
The India-Germany Strategic Partnership, established 25 years ago, is built on four pillars: peace, prosperity, people, and the planet. It has matured into a comprehensive engagement with strong economic interdependence, with Germany being India's largest trading partner in the EU and a major source of foreign direct investment (FDI).
Over 2,000 German companies operate in India, creating significant employment. Both nations collaborate extensively in multilateral forums like the UN and have shared interests in regional stability, climate change, and sustainable development.
Germany is proactive about doubling bilateral trade volumes with India, aiming to expand economic cooperation across manufacturing, technology, renewable energy, automotive, and healthcare sectors.
The cooperation is not limited to trade but extends to strategic and technological domains, reflecting Germany's recognition of India’s growing role in shaping the international order amid geopolitical challenges.
The natural alliance between democracies like India and Germany underscores their shared commitment to preserving a rules-based international order and addressing global challenges together.
The recent dialogues between India and Germany emphasise enhanced trade facilitation, regulatory improvements, expanded market access, and strategic bilateral cooperation.
The mutual support for the India-EU FTA, bilateral economic growth, and joint efforts in innovation and security underscore the growing depth and breadth of this 25-year-old strategic partnership.
