TKMS Signs Agreement With VEM Tech For Development of Heavyweight Torpedoes

Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), a global leader in naval defence technology, has recently entered into a significant partnership with Hyderabad-based VEM Technologies by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This collaboration marks a strategic step toward the development, production, integration, testing, and modernisation of heavyweight torpedoes in India, underpinning a robust Indo-German defence cooperation framework.
The MoU establishes a framework where TKMS, supported by its specialised segment Atlas Elektronik, will collaborate closely with VEM Technologies, a recognised developer and manufacturer of defence and airborne system components, to localise critical aspects of heavyweight torpedo technology.
VEM Technologies will assume key responsibilities for integration and testing of the torpedoes on Indian soil, thereby promoting indigenous manufacturing capabilities and advancing India’s "Make-in-India" defence initiative. This alliance aims to strengthen local defence industrial infrastructure by leveraging TKMS’s technical expertise and VEM’s established manufacturing pedigree.
Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS, emphasised that the agreement is a clear signal of TKMS’s commitment to being a reliable partner to the Indian Navy. He highlighted that the partnership not only accelerates strategic defence manufacturing in India but also contributes to the sustainable growth of the Indian defence sector over the long term.
The cooperation between TKMS and VEM Technologies extends beyond torpedoes and includes plans to collaborate with another Indian company, CFF Fluid Control Limited, to develop advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems for surface vessels, fortifying the Indian Navy's technological edge.
Moreover, both TKMS and VEM Technologies are exploring avenues to expand their cooperation, including participation in the Indian Navy’s P75(I) submarine program and engaging with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other Indian defence entities.
The discussions also encompass establishing enhanced production centres in India to serve both domestic and global markets, indicating a broader vision to make India a hub for naval defence manufacturing.
TKMS is globally recognised with over 8,500 employees across key shipyards and locations worldwide, specialising in submarine and surface vessel systems as well as maritime electronics and security technologies.
This MoU with VEM Technologies not only underscores TKMS's strategic pivot towards deeper engagement in the Indian defence ecosystem but also promises to deliver advanced heavyweight torpedo capabilities, contributing to strengthened maritime security and technological self-reliance for India.
