The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program has achieved another critical milestone with the successful completion of the static strength test setup for the flaperon test box assembly.

This achievement underscores the robustness of the design and validates the structural integrity of one of the most vital control surfaces of the aircraft.

The flaperon, a hybrid aerodynamic surface combining the functions of both flaps and ailerons, plays a crucial role in manoeuvrability and flight control. Its design qualification through static strength testing ensures that the component can withstand the extreme aerodynamic loads and stresses encountered during high-performance flight operations.

The test box assembly was subjected to rigorous evaluation, simulating operational loads and stress conditions.

The completion of this static strength test marks a significant step in certifying the flaperon’s readiness for integration into the AMCA airframe. 

Such tests are indispensable in validating the safety and reliability of advanced aerospace structures before they are cleared for flight testing.

In parallel, advanced instrumentation techniques have been employed in other aspects of the AMCA’s development.

Notably, 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was utilised during bird strike tests on AMCA components.

This cutting-edge optical measurement technology allows engineers to capture full-field strain and deformation data in real time, providing unprecedented insights into material behaviour under dynamic impact conditions.

The use of DIC in bird strike testing highlights the comprehensive scope of the program, ensuring that the aircraft meets stringent safety standards. Bird strikes remain a critical hazard in aviation, and the ability to validate component resilience through advanced optical techniques represents a major leap in aerospace testing methodology.

The successful qualification of the flaperon test box, combined with the adoption of advanced testing technologies, reflects the technical depth of India’s aerospace initiatives.
