India has successfully conducted the test-firing of the nuclear-capable Agni-4 medium-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur off the Odisha coast on Thursday.

The launch was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, which operates under India’s Nuclear Command Authority and is responsible for the management and administration of the country’s tactical and strategic nuclear weapons stockpile. The defence ministry confirmed that the test validated all operational and technical parameters.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Agni-4 is capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional payloads. It is considered a major pillar of India’s nuclear triad and strategic deterrence posture.

The missile is a two-stage solid propellant system with a payload capacity of 1,000 kilograms. It is launched from a mobile tandem launcher, which allows rapid deployment and enhances survivability against pre-emptive strikes.

From launch sites in India, Agni-4 can reach deep into major strategic centres across almost all of mainland China, particularly when launched from eastern or north-eastern regions. Its strike range also covers parts of Southeast Asia, West Asia and Central Asia.

Since its first test in 2010, Agni-4 has undergone eight flight trials. Initially named Agni-II Prime, it is a derivative of the Agni-II missile but with extended range.

The missile features an advanced re-entry heat shield designed to withstand extreme exterior skin temperatures exceeding 3,000°C, while ensuring that internal electronic systems and avionics remain fully operational at temperatures below 50°C. Agni-4 is accurate to less than 100 metres circular error probable at its maximum range of 4,000 kilometres, underscoring its precision strike capability.

Structurally, Agni-4 employs a 1.2 metre-diameter maraging steel-cased first stage and a roughly 1 metre-diameter carbon-fibre-cased second stage. These generate average thrusts of 710 kN and 39.5 kN respectively. The missile uses an inertial guidance system equipped with ring laser gyroscopes and flex-seal thrust vectoring systems, enabling precise orientation control during flight and ensuring high-accuracy targeting.

The defence ministry further noted that the missile system is equipped with modern and compact avionics with redundancy, providing a high level of reliability. This ensures operational readiness and strengthens India’s deterrence posture.

The Agni-4 test represents another milestone in India’s strategic defence program, reinforcing its layered missile development trajectory and its commitment to credible minimum deterrence.
