Rfly Innovations has emerged as the L-1 bidder for the supply of 36 ISR drones to the Indian Army, with the contract valued at approximately ₹7 crore. This development highlights India’s growing reliance on indigenous unmanned systems to strengthen surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities along sensitive borders.

The Indian Army recently concluded the bidding process for the acquisition of 36 ISR drones under the Government e-Marketplace framework. Rfly Innovations, a start-up recognised under the Make in India initiative, emerged as the L-1 bidder.

The drones offered by the company are the Rfly-Pro X2 model, equipped with both day and night operational capabilities. The contract is valued at around ₹7 crore, reflecting the Army’s emphasis on cost-effective yet technologically advanced solutions.

The tender attracted participation from several Indian firms, including established names such as Indo Wings, IG Drones, Aero360, and Kambill. However, most were disqualified during technical evaluation, leaving Rfly Innovations as the qualified bidder.

The evaluation process highlighted the Army’s stringent requirements for ISR platforms, ensuring that only systems meeting operational standards were considered.

ISR drones are critical assets for modern battlefield awareness. They provide real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, enabling commanders to monitor troop movements, detect infiltrations, and assess terrain conditions.

The Rfly-Pro X2 drones are designed to operate in diverse environments, offering endurance and reliability for battalion-level operations. Their dual-mode sensors allow effective monitoring during both daylight and night-time missions, enhancing situational awareness across varied terrains.

The company’s UAV portfolio also includes advanced tethered systems such as the RFLY Tether drone. This platform offers limitless endurance with flight times exceeding eight hours, tether heights up to 120 metres, and operational capability at altitudes of 4,500 metres above mean sea level.

It is engineered to withstand wind speeds of up to 12 metres per second. Payload options include a 30X optical zoom day camera, a 640 thermal night camera, a 30X day and night combo camera, and an advanced 80X hybrid zoom day and night combo camera.

These specifications demonstrate Rfly’s ability to deliver versatile surveillance solutions tailored to military requirements.

The Indian Army has been steadily expanding its drone fleet to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Until recently, much of India’s ISR capability was sourced from countries such as Israel and the United States.

The induction of indigenous drones like those from Rfly Innovations reflects a strategic shift towards self-reliance in defence technology. This aligns with the broader Defence Ministry program to encourage domestic manufacturers and strengthen India’s defence industrial base.
