HAL To Deliver First Batch of Indigenous HTT-40 Trainers To IAF Amid Engine Delays

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is preparing to deliver the first batch of three HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force, marking a significant milestone in a program that has faced repeated delays due to engine shortages, India Times reported.
The delivery comes after the IAF placed an order for 70 HTT-40 aircraft worth ₹6,838 crore three years ago to meet its basic pilot training requirements. HAL had been scheduled to deliver 12 aircraft during FY26 but failed to hand over any due to the absence of engines.
Two of the aircraft in this initial batch have been built at HAL’s Bangalore facility, while the third has been manufactured in Nashik. The shortage of engines had stalled progress, but US-based Honeywell has now overcome supply-chain bottlenecks and delivered the first batch of TPE331-12B turboprop engines to HAL, paving the way for deliveries to finally begin.
The engine supply is part of a $100 million contract signed four years ago, covering 88 TPE331-12B engines and kits.
Honeywell is directly supplying 16 engines, while HAL will manufacture the remaining units under a technology-transfer arrangement. This arrangement is expected to stabilise supplies and ensure continuity in production.
HAL has ramped up its production capacity and can now produce up to 20 HTT-40 aircraft annually across its Bangalore and Nashik facilities.
The production lines for the HTT-40 and the TEJAS MK-1A were inaugurated at Nashik last October by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, as part of a broader push to expand indigenous aircraft manufacturing capacity. This expansion is intended to reduce dependence on imported platforms and strengthen India’s aerospace ecosystem.
The HTT-40 is designed to provide basic flying training to IAF pilots before they move on to more advanced stages. At present, rookie pilots undergo Stage-I flying training on Swiss-origin Pilatus PC-7 MK-II aircraft.
After completing this stage, pilots are divided into fighter, transport and helicopter streams. Fighter pilots continue advanced training on PC-7 MK-II and Kiran MK-1A jet trainers before progressing to the Hawk advanced jet trainer for Stage-III training. The induction of the HTT-40 will provide an indigenous option for Stage-I training and reduce reliance on foreign trainers.
The initial deliveries of the HTT-40 will mark a crucial step in the long-delayed program, enabling HAL to scale up production and meet the IAF’s contracted requirement.
The aircraft’s entry into service is expected to strengthen India’s self-reliance in defence aviation and provide a reliable platform for training future generations of pilots.
