Chief of Naval Staff Admiral K Swaminathan has underlined that the Indian Navy is maintaining a close watch on China’s rapidly expanding maritime footprint and growing naval capabilities, stressing that developments involving the Chinese Navy are being monitored with great attention.

Speaking on India’s maritime security priorities, Admiral Swaminathan noted that China’s rise as a major military and economic power, along with its expanding presence across the world’s oceans, has drawn international scrutiny. He said that these developments make it essential for India to remain vigilant and continuously assess maritime activity in its wider neighbourhood.

“We closely watch China,” the Navy Chief remarked, highlighting the importance of understanding the capabilities and movements of a nation whose naval reach has increased significantly in recent years.

At the same time, Admiral Swaminathan made it clear that the Indian Navy’s objective is not to seek conflict. Instead, he emphasised that a strong and capable naval force serves as a deterrent, helping to prevent war rather than provoke it.

According to the Navy Chief, maintaining operational readiness and robust combat capability remains central to India’s maritime strategy. He stressed that the Indian Navy must remain prepared to respond wherever national interests require, ensuring the country can protect its security interests across the maritime domain.

His remarks reflect India’s broader focus on safeguarding the Indian Ocean Region, a strategically important area through which a substantial share of global trade and energy supplies passes.

The region has witnessed increasing naval activity in recent years, including the deployment of extra-regional warships, submarines and advanced maritime systems, making maritime awareness and preparedness an increasingly important component of national security.

Admiral Swaminathan’s comments also align with the Indian Navy’s emphasis on sustained surveillance, operational preparedness and deterrence. While reiterating that India does not desire confrontation, he indicated that credible military capability and constant vigilance remain essential in an evolving maritime security environment.

The Navy Chief’s message was clear: India seeks stability and peace at sea, but it will continue to monitor China’s activities closely and remain fully prepared to protect its interests whenever and wherever required.
