Security forces have killed a terrorist involved in the murder of an Indian Army rifleman, Aurangzeb, last year.

The man, named Shaukat Ahmad Dar, was killed on Saturday in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. Two other militants were killed in the gun battle.

There were two other encounters -- one in Anantnag district and another in Sopore, located in North Kashmir, where one militant was killed.

Aurangzeb, 24, was posted with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles; he was abducted in June 2018 when he was travelling home for Eid. He was later found dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

One of Aurangzeb's brothers was speaking to him on the phone when he was abducted.

"I never imagined terrorists were kidnapping my unarmed brother," the teenager said at the time.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Aurangzeb's family after he was killed, and described him as an "inspiration for the entire nation".

The rifleman was awarded a Shaurya Chakra.

His father, Mohammed Hanief, joined the BJP this year.
