A Pakistani national attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory was apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the International Border (IB) in the R S Pura sector of Jammu district on Sunday night, officials confirmed on Monday.

The intruder, identified as Siraj Khan, a resident of Sargodha in Pakistan's Punjab province, was spotted by vigilant BSF personnel at the Octroi border outpost around 9:20 pm. Upon observing suspicious movement near the border fence, the alert BSF troops challenged the intruder.

When he failed to comply with the warnings, the personnel fired a few rounds as a deterrent before successfully overpowering and arresting him close to the fencing. Initial searches led to the recovery of some Pakistani currency notes from Khan, although no arms or contraband were found in his possession at the time of arrest.

Security agencies have initiated an intensive interrogation to determine his exact motive and whether his infiltration attempt was an isolated incident or part of a larger design by anti-national elements to fuel security concerns in the sensitive border region.

The incident comes amid heightened surveillance along the IB, where infiltration attempts and narcotics smuggling rackets have witnessed a spike in recent months.

Defence and security officials in Jammu emphasise that the arrest highlights both the constant vigilance of BSF personnel guarding the frontier and the persistent efforts by elements across the border to test India’s security grid.

Further investigations are underway, and the possibility of militant links, reconnaissance attempts, or narcotics-related smuggling motives is not being ruled out.

The arrest underscores the fragile and tense nature of border management in the Jammu sector, where even minor incursions are treated with utmost seriousness given their potential implications for internal security.
