EAM Jaishankar Holds Talks With Iowa Governor On India-US Economic Ties

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar met with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds in New Delhi on September 8, 2025, to discuss the current and potential future economic ties between India and the United States.
The discussion centred on strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, reflecting the importance both sides place on enhancing trade and investment relations.
Governor Reynolds, a Republican, is visiting India to build on previous business and trade relationships between Iowa and India and to explore new investment opportunities in sectors including agriculture.
This meeting occurs amid a broader context of some tensions in India-US relations, particularly concerning recent US-imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods, which include penalties related to India's continued purchase of Russian oil.
Despite these tariff issues and some political expressions of dissatisfaction from US President Donald Trump regarding certain Indian policies, both countries emphasise the significance of their economic relationship and comprehensive strategic partnership.
Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded warmly to President Trump’s remarks on their bilateral ties, stating that he "deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates" the positive sentiments expressed by Trump.
Modi described India-US relations as a "very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership."
Trump, while reaffirming his personal friendship with Modi and calling the relationship "very special," also expressed dissatisfaction with some of Modi’s recent actions but clarified that the relationship between the two countries remains fundamentally strong and that “there is nothing to worry about."
He mentioned that while there are occasional moments of disagreement, the partnership endures and is important for both nations.
These dialogues and statements illustrate that while there are current challenges in trade and geopolitical issues, particularly around tariffs and international alignments, the leaderships of both countries are actively engaging to maintain and expand ties with a focus on long-term strategic and economic partnership.
The emphasis on economic ties, especially the discussions in New Delhi with Governor Reynolds, highlights ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation in commerce, investment, and technology exchanges as part of this broader diplomatic relationship.
The engagements between Jaishankar and Governor Reynolds, along with the comments from Modi and Trump, reflect a complex but resilient India-US bilateral relationship that prioritises economic partnership amidst some political and policy disagreements.
