Paras Defence, based in Navi Mumbai, is actively advancing the RayStrike-9, an indigenous Directed Energy Weapon system that represents a major step in India’s counter-drone program.

The system is designed in the 3kW to 9kW class, offering scalable laser power configurations to meet diverse operational requirements. It has been conceived to detect, track, and neutralise hostile drone swarms and aerial threats with precision, delivering engagements at the speed of light.

The RayStrike-9 has an effective range between 1.2 kilometres and 2.5 kilometres, making it suitable for both close-range and medium-range aerial defence scenarios. Built in collaboration with DRDO’s Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), the system integrates AI-powered targeting algorithms with advanced electro-optics.

This combination ensures rapid identification and tracking of multiple aerial targets, even in complex environments where swarming drones pose significant challenges.

One of the most notable operational benefits of the RayStrike-9 is its infinite magazine capacity. Unlike conventional kinetic interceptors, which require continuous resupply of ammunition, the laser system can deliver repeated engagements without logistical strain.

This dramatically reduces the cost per engagement in modern anti-drone warfare, making it a cost-effective solution against the growing proliferation of low-cost UAVs and loitering munitions.

Paras Defence has also expanded its anti-drone portfolio beyond the RayStrike-9. The company secured exclusive Indian manufacturing and commercialisation rights for the Guardian-1 Interceptor through an agreement with USA-based Tandem Defense LLC.

This interceptor adds another layer to India’s counter-UAS capabilities, offering kinetic interception options alongside directed energy systems. The diversification of technologies reflects Paras Defence’s strategy to provide comprehensive solutions across the spectrum of drone threats.

In addition, the company has developed portable detection systems tailored for mobile operations. These include an integrated Manpack Drone Detector capable of scanning frequencies from 400 MHz to 6 GHz, paired with Handheld Drone Jammers.

Such systems are designed for rapid deployment by security forces, enabling them to detect and disrupt hostile drones in urban environments, border areas, and high-security zones. The portability of these solutions ensures flexibility in tactical scenarios where larger systems may not be practical.

The development of the RayStrike-9 and associated systems underscores India’s determination to achieve self-reliance in advanced defence technologies. Paras Defence’s collaboration with DRDO-CHESS ensures that indigenous expertise in optics, electro-magnetic systems, and AI-driven targeting is harnessed to create battlefield-ready solutions.

This aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while positioning India as a competitive player in the global defence technology market.

Globally, directed energy weapons are being pursued by major powers such as the United States, China, and Russia, all of whom view high-power lasers as critical to future air defence. India’s progress with the RayStrike-9 demonstrates its intent to match these developments and establish technological parity. 

The system’s ability to neutralise drones at the speed of light, combined with its cost efficiency, makes it a vital addition to India’s layered defence posture.
