Bangalore Start-Up Secures US Patent For ARGUS Optical Ground Station, Boosting India’s Private Space Sector

QOSMIC Satellite Systems, a Bangalore-based deep-tech Start-Up founded in 2025, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a United States patent for its ARGUS optical ground station architecture.
This development is being hailed as a major advancement for India’s private space sector, underscoring the growing role of indigenous companies in high-technology satellite infrastructure.
The company was established by Shreyaans Jain, Rohit Ramakrishnan, and Aloke Kumar. Jain, who serves as CEO, built the foundation of QOSMIC from his research work at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
His contributions to satellite development for private missions and projects linked to India’s Gaganyaan mission were carried out under the mentorship of co-founder Professor Aloke Kumar. This academic-industrial collaboration has now matured into a commercial enterprise with global recognition.
QOSMIC focuses on building optical ground station infrastructure for satellite laser communications. Unlike firms that operate satellites directly, QOSMIC’s expertise lies in developing the underlying systems and components that enable satellites to function effectively. Its work includes electronics, hardware, and specialised architectures that power and control satellite operations.
The patented ARGUS system represents a breakthrough in optical ground station design. Instead of relying on a single large telescope, ARGUS integrates multiple smaller telescope units into a unified high-performance receiving system.
This multi-aperture approach allows the station to capture and combine high-speed laser signals transmitted by satellites with greater efficiency and resilience.
The patent, granted on 8 September 2026, details the innovative multi-aperture telescope design. QOSMIC had filed for the patent in April, and the unusually swift approval highlights the novelty and technical strength of the invention. Such rapid recognition is rare in the field of specialised space hardware, where patent reviews often take years.
ARGUS is designed to address the growing demand for secure, high-bandwidth satellite communications. By enabling optical signal reception at scale, the system reduces dependence on conventional radio frequency links, which face increasing spectrum congestion. The architecture is expected to support applications in Earth observation, defence communications, and commercial satellite networks.
The achievement is being seen as a substantial move for India’s private space sector. With the government encouraging private participation through IN-SPACe and NewSpace India Limited, companies like QOSMIC are positioning themselves as critical players in the emerging ecosystem.
The patent strengthens India’s credibility in advanced satellite communications and demonstrates the ability of domestic Start-Ups to compete globally.
QOSMIC’s success also reflects a broader trend in India’s space industry, where private enterprises are increasingly complementing ISRO’s efforts. The recognition of ARGUS in the United States adds international legitimacy to India’s technological capabilities and opens doors for collaborations with global satellite operators.
This development is expected to accelerate innovation in optical communications, a field that promises faster, more secure, and more efficient data transfer between satellites and ground stations.
