Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi met with Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Nghia, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, to discuss strengthening bilateral defence cooperation. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the United Nations Training and Coordination Conference (UNTCC) 2025 in New Delhi.

According to the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), the discussions centred on enhancing cooperation in UN peacekeeping operations, counter-terrorism, and expanding strategic coordination between the two armies. Both sides underscored the importance of practical cooperation through joint exercises, professional exchanges, and capacity-building initiatives that contribute to regional stability.

The interaction reaffirmed the growing defence ties between India and Vietnam, with emphasis on training exchanges and knowledge sharing between the two forces. These engagements are part of a broader effort to enhance interoperability and mutual understanding between the armies of both nations, building upon a series of earlier engagements held this year.

The bilateral talks followed a recent interaction in August between Indian and Vietnamese defence officials during the CHODs 2025 conference in Thailand. There, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC) of India, held discussions with Vietnamese representatives on enhancing defence and interoperability mechanisms across the Indo-Pacific region.

The meeting coincided with the United Nations Troop Contributing Countries’ (UNTCC) Chiefs Conclave, hosted by India from October 14 to 16, 2025. The event brought together senior military leadership from more than 30 nations to share insights on evolving global security challenges and to strengthen collective approaches to peacekeeping.

During the conclave, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix highlighted the evolving nature of UN Peace Operations in addressing emerging global threats. The Ministry of Defence stated that the conclave aimed at bolstering collective commitment to global peace and security through enhanced dialogue, interoperability, and exchange of best practices among troop-contributing nations.

India also used the platform to showcase its commitment to leveraging indigenous technologies and Atmanirbhar innovations to make peacekeeping missions more resilient, cost-effective, and future-ready. The deliberations promoted inclusivity and advocated for a stronger voice for troop-contributing countries in UN decision-making, emphasising India’s reputation as a reliable partner in global peace operations.
