DRDO’s NSTL Transfers LM2500 Gas Turbine Technology To Vertex Engineering For Indigenous Naval Power Systems

The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) under DRDO has signed a Technology Transfer agreement with Vertex Engineering Systems in Hyderabad to enable indigenous fabrication, installation, and commissioning of GE LM2500 gas turbines, a major step toward India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat defence indigenisation program.
This partnership ensures critical propulsion systems for Indian Navy warships can be locally produced and maintained, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
The agreement with Vertex Engineering Systems represents a strategic move to strengthen India’s defence industrial base. By transferring technology for the LM2500 gas turbines, NSTL is ensuring that domestic industry gains the capability to fabricate, integrate, and commission these complex propulsion units.
The LM2500 is a widely deployed marine gas turbine powering destroyers, frigates, and aircraft carriers, making its local support infrastructure vital for operational readiness.
The technological phases outlined in the agreement are comprehensive. Fabrication and sourcing will involve precision manufacturing of base frames, piping loops, and acoustic enclosures using high-grade exotic alloys.

Finally, commissioning will set operational parameters for flow, pressure, and temperature to ensure peak propulsion and power output reliability.
