HAL Airport in Bangalore has achieved a landmark in Indian aviation by operationalising the country’s first Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure, India Today reported.

This advanced satellite-guided precision navigation system has been designed exclusively for helicopters.

The Airports Authority of India developed the procedure, which was validated through flight trials conducted by HAL’s test pilots before receiving approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The system enables helicopters to fly highly accurate and optimised flight paths, ensuring safer operations even in adverse weather conditions.

One of the most significant advantages of the new system is its ability to reduce approach time dramatically. Helicopters flying into HAL Airport can now complete their approach in about four minutes, compared to nearly twelve minutes earlier. This improvement enhances operational efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The RNP CAT H procedure relies on satellite-based navigation rather than conventional ground-based systems. This allows helicopters to safely navigate around terrain, buildings and urban obstacles while maintaining precise flight paths.

Ravi K, Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, described the operationalisation of India’s first RNP CAT H helicopter approach as a milestone for the country’s aviation ecosystem. He emphasised that the capability enhances safety, efficiency and accessibility of helicopter operations and sets a benchmark for similar procedures to be implemented nationwide.

The new system is expected to benefit a wide range of helicopter operations, including emergency medical services, disaster response, search-and-rescue missions and corporate aviation.

It also enables smoother integration of helicopter traffic with fixed-wing aircraft operations, thereby increasing overall airspace capacity at busy airports.

Another major benefit is the reduction in noise footprint over densely populated urban areas. By following precise and optimised flight paths rather than wider conventional approaches, helicopters can minimise disturbance to communities.

HAL Airport currently handles nearly fifty helicopter movements daily, making it one of India’s busiest helicopter hubs.

Aviation experts note that the successful implementation of RNP CAT H closes a long-standing gap in India’s aviation infrastructure. It could pave the way for similar satellite-based helicopter approach procedures at airports across the country, ushering in safer, faster and smarter rotorcraft operations.

This achievement positions India alongside global leaders in precision helicopter navigation. Comparable systems have been adopted in advanced aviation markets such as the United States and Europe, where satellite-guided helicopter procedures have improved safety and efficiency in complex urban environments.

The operationalisation at HAL Airport demonstrates India’s growing capability in integrating cutting-edge navigation technologies into its aviation framework. It also highlights the collaborative role of HAL, AAI and DGCA in strengthening the country’s aviation infrastructure.
