India Optel Limited has developed an indigenous telescopic sight for the AK-203 rifles, marking another milestone in India’s defence self-reliance program.

This innovation strengthens the country’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat by equipping the fully indigenised AK-203 Sher rifles with locally designed optical systems, enhancing precision and combat readiness.

India Optel Limited (IOL), formed in 2021 after the corporatisation of the Ordnance Factory Board, is a wholly government-owned enterprise under the Department of Defence Production. Its facilities in Dehradun and Chandigarh specialise in electro-optical sensors, weapon sights, and communication gear. 

The company has clarified that while full-scale supply is not yet underway, the indigenous telescopic sight development is progressing steadily as part of India’s long-term capability building.

The telescopic sight designed for the AK-203 rifles is tailored to India’s operational environments. It is being developed alongside other advanced sighting systems such as day telescopic sights for 7.62×51 mm rifles and thermal imaging sights for the 7.62×39 mm AK-203 platform. These systems are intended to improve combat precision in diverse terrains, from high-altitude borders to desert zones.

India Optel has prior experience in producing telescopic sights for the INSAS rifle. The INSAS variant featured 2.5x magnification, a 15° field of view, and a reticule pattern designed for accurate targeting at ranges between 100 and 400 metres. The new AK-203 sight builds upon this expertise, offering improved optics and rugged design to meet modern battlefield requirements.

The AK-203 Sher rifle itself represents India’s success in achieving 100% indigenisation. Manufactured by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) at the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, the rifle uses entirely Indian components and materials.

It fires the 7.62×39 mm cartridge, has an effective range of 800 metres, and a cyclic rate of 700 rounds per minute. Army trials are scheduled for September 2026, with mass production expected to deliver over six lakh rifles by 2032, though IRRPL aims to complete deliveries by December 2030.

The integration of India Optel’s telescopic sight with the AK-203 Sher rifle will significantly enhance the weapon’s battlefield utility. Indigenous optics reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, ensure compatibility with Indian operational needs, and contribute to the broader defence ecosystem. This development also aligns with India’s strategic goal of building a robust domestic supply chain for small arms and accessories.

By combining the fully indigenised AK-203 Sher rifle with locally developed telescopic sights, India is not only replacing the problematic INSAS rifles but also creating a modern, self-reliant infantry weapon system. This marks a critical step in strengthening India’s defence preparedness and technological sovereignty.
