Kochi-based marine robotics and AI deep-tech Start-Up EyeROV has achieved a national milestone by delivering two TROUT military-grade underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) systems to the Indian Navy, marking the first operational induction of an Indian-designed and Indian-manufactured military-grade underwater robotic platform into naval service, New Indian Express reported.

The delivery forms part of a larger Indian Navy order for five TROUT systems and represents the transition of the platform from an indigenous innovation project into an operational capability for naval use.

TROUT is the first military-grade ROV developed, manufactured, qualified and tested in India specifically to meet naval operational requirements. Its induction strengthens India's efforts to reduce dependence on imported underwater systems while expanding domestic expertise in advanced marine robotics.

Designed as a rugged and mission-ready platform, TROUT is intended for a broad range of critical underwater tasks, including inspection, surveillance and reconnaissance, search and recovery missions, detection operations and robotic intervention in challenging subsea environments.

According to EyeROV Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Johns T. Mathai, the project has evolved from an ambitious indigenous engineering effort into a fully operational underwater robotic platform capable of supporting the Indian Navy's mission requirements. He said the achievement demonstrates India's growing ability to develop advanced marine robotic technologies domestically.

The system was developed under the iDEX DISC 7 SPRINT Challenge, a flagship initiative aimed at creating strategically important indigenous technologies for the Indian Armed Forces. The project involved the design, integration and validation of a comprehensive underwater robotic ecosystem with support from the Indian Navy as the nodal agency.

EyeROV Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder Kannappa Palaniappan P highlighted that the development of a military-grade underwater robot required the successful integration of mechanical engineering, electronics, embedded systems, software, navigation, sensing, communications and robotic control into a single reliable platform capable of operating in demanding conditions.

Before induction, TROUT underwent extensive field trials and system-level validation focused on manoeuvrability, deep-diving performance, endurance, navigation, operator control, detection capability and operations in strong underwater currents.

The platform was also evaluated under the Directorate of Quality Assurance (Naval) framework and engineered to comply with Environmental Stress Screening requirements and applicable military standards governing operational and environmental resilience.

TROUT is designed to function effectively in hazardous underwater environments where poor visibility, strong currents, significant depth and restricted accessibility can make traditional diving or inspection operations difficult and potentially dangerous.

The system has completed type testing, validating that its design performs according to specification under defined operational conditions. This qualification process distinguishes it from commercial underwater vehicles and supports its readiness for sustained naval service.

Additional industry reports indicate that the TROUT platform has a depth rating of up to 300 metres, enabling it to undertake deep-water surveillance, inspection and infrastructure monitoring missions.

The growing importance of underwater robotics reflects the Indian Navy's increasing focus on maritime domain awareness, port and harbour security, protection of underwater infrastructure, surveillance of strategic assets and rapid response during search-and-recovery operations.

For India, the indigenous development and deployment of TROUT aligns closely with the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, strengthening strategic autonomy in an area of technology that has traditionally relied heavily on overseas suppliers.

EyeROV's achievement also demonstrates the growing maturity of India's Start-Up-led defence innovation ecosystem, highlighting how iDEX-backed technologies are increasingly progressing from prototype development to frontline military deployment.
