Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Amir of Qatar, on Wednesday, underscoring New Delhi’s continuing commitment to deepening the India-Qatar Strategic Partnership at a time of heightened regional tensions.

Both leaders reviewed the progress in the partnership, noting significant advancements across multiple sectors such as trade, investment, energy security, and defence cooperation. The dialogue reaffirmed their mutual intent to enhance cooperation in diverse fields of shared interest, ensuring that bilateral ties between New Delhi and Doha continue to grow on a robust trajectory.

The conversation took place against the backdrop of recent strikes in Doha that targeted Hamas leaders, an incident that has drawn international scrutiny. Prime Minister Modi conveyed India’s deep concern regarding these developments and unequivocally condemned the violation of Qatar’s sovereignty.

Emphasising India’s principled stand, he reiterated that the resolution of conflicts should be guided by dialogue and diplomacy rather than escalation or unilateral military action. Modi stressed India’s firm opposition to terrorism in all its manifestations, while at the same time highlighting the importance of respecting sovereignty and working collectively for regional stability.

The Indian Prime Minister also lauded Qatar’s active mediation efforts in the Gaza crisis, particularly its role in brokering ceasefire agreements and negotiating the release of hostages. He acknowledged Doha’s diplomatic engagement as a constructive contribution to peace and security in the wider Middle East. Modi noted that such efforts align with India’s consistent advocacy for peaceful solutions, regional dialogue, and a rules-based international order that upholds national sovereignty.

By extending support for Qatar’s mediation, India doubled down on its identity as a partner that encourages negotiated settlements over coercive measures.

During the exchange, the Amir of Qatar expressed his gratitude for India’s words of solidarity and firm backing at a time when Doha faced challenges to its sovereignty and security. Sheikh Tamim emphasised his appreciation for New Delhi’s principled and balanced position, highlighting India’s credibility as a partner in regional diplomacy. He also acknowledged India’s broader contributions to regional peace-building, as well as the deep-rooted cultural, economic, and strategic ties binding Qatar and India for decades.

The leaders also touched upon the sustained growth in bilateral cooperation, referencing the increasing scale of trade, strategic investment flows, and collaboration in areas such as food security, infrastructure, and clean energy transition. Security and defence cooperation remained equally prominent in their assessment of the strategic partnership, reflective of both Doha’s role as a key energy supplier to India and India’s large expatriate community contributing substantially to Qatar’s economic and social fabric.

In his subsequent post on X, Prime Minister Modi publicly reiterated his concern over the events in Doha, condemning the violation of Qatar’s sovereignty in unequivocal terms. He underscored India’s support for peace, security, and stability in the region and its opposition to terrorism in all forms. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, while urging regional actors to avoid steps that may further escalate violence and instability.

The exchange between Modi and Sheikh Tamim signalled a reaffirmation of trust, shared strategic alignment, and the willingness of both nations to jointly address emerging challenges. Coming amid turbulence in the Middle East, the conversation underscored India’s role as a responsible regional stakeholder and a steady partner for Qatar.

Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication in the coming days and to continue steering the India-Qatar Strategic Partnership toward greater depth and dynamism. In doing so, they positioned the bilateral relationship as a pillar of stability, cooperation, and mutual respect in a volatile regional landscape.
