Agni, Akash Missiles Set For Major Range Boost With Precision Glide Bombs


India’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the Agni and Akash missile systems are undergoing major upgrades to extend their range and lethality, with new glide bombs and naval strike weapons also advancing towards induction.

The Akash-NG and Agni Prime are central to this effort, while the Gaurav glide bomb has already demonstrated pinpoint accuracy in trials.

The Akash missile system, which proved its effectiveness during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May 2025, is being upgraded into the Akash-New Generation (Akash-NG). This variant is designed to engage multiple targets simultaneously with full 360° coverage.

It was successfully tested last year, and the Indian Air Force is now conducting user trials. The system will provide air-defence cover against fighter aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, anti-radiation missiles and subsonic cruise missiles.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), is developing the Agni Prime missile with a range of 2,000 km. This missile is unique in being launched from a rail-based mobile launcher, which was tested last year.

The launcher can move across India’s rail network, offering cross-country mobility, rapid launch capability, reduced visibility and independent communication systems. The Agni missile family already includes several inducted variants, notably the Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of 5,500 km, capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Another significant development is the Long-Range Glide Bomb (LRGB) named Gaurav. This 1,000-kg-class weapon has been tested from the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, achieving a range of 100 km with pinpoint accuracy.

Gaurav is designed to strike high-value targets such as bunkers and airstrips from a safe distance, keeping aircraft beyond enemy air-defence reach. Two variants are being developed, each with different warheads tailored for specific targets. A licensing agreement has been signed with Munitions India Limited for technology transfer, ensuring indigenous production.

The Ministry also highlighted progress on the Naval Anti-Ship Missile (NASM-SR), which uses an indigenous guidance system and can adjust its course mid-flight. Rudram-III is under development with both anti-radiation and ground-attack capabilities, expanding India’s suppression of enemy air-defence options. The Vertical Launch Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM) is being designed to neutralise close-range aerial threats, including sea-skimming missiles.

These developments reflect India’s broader defence modernisation program, which is focused on enhancing deterrence and survivability against regional threats. The Akash-NG’s ability to counter multiple aerial threats, the Agni Prime’s rail-based mobility, and the Gaurav glide bomb’s precision strike capability together strengthen India’s layered defence architecture.

The integration of indigenous systems such as NASM-SR, Rudram-III and VLSRSAM further underscores the push for self-reliance in critical technologies.

India's Twin-Seat Fighter Legacy Hinges On Su-30MKI


Line up the world’s major air forces and count the seats. The United States Air Force flies the F-22, the F-16 and the F-35 with one pilot. The F-35 has no two-seat variant in any version, for any customer. France flies mostly single-seat Rafales. China’s J-20 is single-seat, Connor Kerr of MiGFlug delivered a strikingly unusual and amazing piece of technical reporting.

For fifty years the global direction has been to put one person in the cockpit and let computers absorb the difference.

The Indian Air Force went the other way. Slightly more than half of its combat aircraft carry two crew. The reason turns out to be one aircraft, and the explanation usually given for it is wrong.

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is the type in question. Roughly 260 are in service across 13 squadrons, with a sanctioned strength of 272. Every single one is a two-seater. No single-seat Su-30MKI was ever built or ordered.

The Su-30MKI alone accounts for about 46 per cent of the combat fleet and 83 per cent of all twin-seat combat aircraft. If you remove it from the calculation, the twin-seat share drops to about 18 per cent, which is entirely ordinary.

India does not have a twin-seat doctrine. India has a very large fleet of one particular twin-seat aeroplane. The back-seater is a Weapon Systems Officer, a role formalised in October 2022 when the IAF created its Weapon Systems Branch, the first new operational branch since Independence. Since 2002 navigators trained for WSO duties have filled the role.

The usual version of the story is that India studied the problem, decided two crew were better, and specified an all-twin-seat fleet. There is no evidence for that. What actually happened is that the aircraft India bought in November 1996 was a development of the Su-27UB, which was already a two-seater. 

The Su-30 lineage began in 1986 with prototypes converted from Su-27UB airframes, built for a Soviet requirement to intercept bombers and cruise missiles at great distances. In group missions only the Su-30 would run its radar, assigning targets to others by datalink.

It was conceived as a two-man mini-AWACS. India inherited that layout rather than choosing it. A single-seat Su-30 did exist, the Su-30KI, developed for Indonesia and offered more widely, but India did not take it. Why, publicly, nobody has explained.

The two cockpits are identical, fitted with K-36DM zero-zero seats, with the rear seat raised. Indian aircraft carry a Sextant package of six 127mm displays plus one larger 152mm screen. The systems managed are real and Indian: the Astra beyond-visual-range missile, the DRDO Tarang radar warning receiver, and a dual-colour infrared missile approach warning system developed with Israel’s Elisra.

The N011M Bars radar is now being replaced under the Super Sukhoi program by the indigenous gallium nitride Virupaksha AESA, first powered on in February 2026. A retired officer explained that fourth generation combat aircraft needed a Weapon System Operator onboard as it was difficult for a single pilot to fly and manage weapons and systems.

The economics were stated plainly. In October 2022 the IAF created the Weapon Systems Branch covering surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, remotely piloted aircraft and WSOs in twin-crew aircraft. The Su-30MKI was named explicitly as the platform.

The first cohort commissioned at Dundigal in December 2024. The Chief of the Air Staff explained that creation of the branch would result in savings of over ₹3,400 crore due to reduced expenditure on flying training. The IAF was not saying two crew make a better fighter. It was saying that if you are going to put two people in the aeroplane, it is cheaper for the second one to be a WSO than a second fully qualified pilot.

The best argument for the configuration is a weapon. BrahMos-A is an air-launched supersonic cruise missile weighing two and a half tons, the heaviest store an Indian Su-30 has ever carried. Russia quoted around $200 million, roughly ₹1,300 crore, to do the integration. BrahMos chief A Sivathanu Pillai told HAL his budget was just ₹80 crore.

HAL absorbed the design and development costs and did it anyway. Designers at Nashik built a watertight numerical master geometry of the aircraft, solved safe separation with wind tunnel work and computational fluid dynamics, and kept structural changes within the centre-of-gravity envelope. On 22 November 2017 a Su-30MKI launched a BrahMos-A against a sea target 260 km away.

The Ministry of Defence named the crew: two officers, Wing Commander Prashant Nair (shortlisted astronaut for the Indian Human Spaceflight Program) and Wing Commander KP Kiran Kumar. Maritime strike is the mission that most obviously rewards a second crew member. No. 222 Squadron, the Tigersharks, was re-raised at Thanjavur in January 2020 for exactly this. Two Su-30MKIs flew an eight-hour sortie over the Arabian Sea in June 2023, refuelled by Il-78 tankers.

Two myths are worth killing. The Su-30MKI did not beat F-15s at Cope India in 2004. It was not there. The Indian line-up was Su-30K, Mirage-2000, MiG-29, MiG-27 and MiG-21 Bison. The MKIs stayed home because their Bars radar frequencies were classified.

The Su-30MKI is not India’s nuclear delivery aircraft. The 2026 Nuclear Notebook assesses India’s airborne nuclear leg as Mirage-2000H and Jaguar IS squadrons, and does not mention the Su-30MKI. None of India’s cruise missiles have been confirmed to have nuclear missions.

The second seat has not been free. The Comptroller and Auditor General found licence-production costs rising from ₹22,122 crore to ₹39,606 crore, an increase of 79 per cent. A separate report recorded fleet serviceability between 55.5 and 59.7 per cent against a prescribed norm of 75, with aircraft-on-ground between 10.9 and 15.3 per cent.

India’s next-generation fighter, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, is specified single-seat. The TEJAS MK-1A and MK-2 are single-seat. The Rafale fleet is 28 single-seaters to eight twins. The Weapon Systems Branch may turn out to be an institution built around one generation of one aeroplane. 

When the Su-30MKI eventually goes, India’s twin-seat majority goes with it, and the IAF will look much like everybody else.

India did not decide that two heads are better than one. India bought a very good two-seat aeroplane in very large numbers, discovered that the second seat was genuinely useful for maritime strike and long-range work, and then built a career path to fill it economically. Everything else is reverse-engineered explanation.

Denied Access, India Built Its Own: The Story Behind Dr Meena Mishra Who Developed GaN Chip For Next-Gen Defence Platforms


India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation has achieved a landmark breakthrough in semiconductor technology with the successful development of indigenous Gallium Nitride-based Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit technology for high-frequency defence systems, Economic Times reported.

At the centre of this achievement is Dr Meena Mishra, director of the Solid State Physics Laboratory, who has led the team that built this capability despite the technology being denied to India by other countries.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted the achievement in its annual report for 2025–26, noting that the indigenous GaN technology can support next-generation radar, electronic warfare, communications, and unmanned platforms.

A single chip measuring just 3.5 mm by 3 mm can deliver up to 30 watts of power while operating at speeds up to 300 times faster than silicon, making it a decisive leap in India’s semiconductor capability for defence.

Gallium Nitride is a semiconductor material suited to applications where electronics must operate at high frequencies and handle significant power. These characteristics are vital for systems that generate, amplify, receive, and control high-frequency signals, including radar transmitters, electronic warfare equipment, and communications systems.

GaN components are particularly relevant to active electronically scanned array radars, electronic warfare jammers, and other military systems where compact, high-performance electronics are essential.

In defence systems, GaN semiconductor components manage high-frequency electrical signals. In AESA radars, transmit and receive modules allow electronic beam control without mechanical movement.

GaN-based components enable higher-power signals, improved efficiency, and reduced size and weight. The same technology is used in electronic warfare systems to detect, interfere with, or respond to adversary signals.

The Solid State Physics Laboratory has developed indigenous processes for producing four-inch silicon carbide wafers and fabricating GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors.

These have been rated up to 150 watts, while MMICs have been rated up to 40 watts for X-band applications. Limited production capability for GaN-on-SiC MMICs has been established at the Gallium Arsenide Enabling Technology Centre in Hyderabad.

The Ministry of Defence has emphasised that GaN and silicon carbide technology provides improved efficiency, reduced size and weight, and enhanced performance for future combat systems, radars, electronic warfare equipment, and communications.

Applications extend across fighter aircraft, naval vessels, ground-based air-defence systems, missiles, drones, and other unmanned platforms. Beyond defence, multifunctional MMICs have applications in strategic systems, space, aerospace, 5G, and satellite communications.

The significance of this development lies in its strategic independence. GaN technology is considered sensitive, and exports are restricted by several countries. India had previously relied on imports for most GaN components, creating vulnerabilities in defence supply chains. Indigenous capability ensures that Indian defence platforms are no longer dependent on overseas suppliers for critical semiconductor components.

The Innovations for Defence Excellence program has supported this effort. In December 2023, the Ministry signed a contract with Agnit Semiconductors Private Limited to design and develop advanced GaN components for next-generation wireless transmitters used in radars and electronic warfare jammers. This reflects the growing role of Indian Start-Ups in strengthening the country’s defence technology base.

India’s entry into the GaN technology club places it among a select group of nations with indigenous capabilities in advanced semiconductor technology for defence.

The achievement led by Dr Meena Mishra and her team at SSPL is not only a scientific milestone but also a strategic step towards self-reliance, enabling India to modernise its defence platforms and expand export potential in high-technology systems.

Army Chief’s Russia Visit Puts Spare Parts, Air Defence, BMP-3 And Future Tanks In Spotlight


Army Chief Gen Dhiraj Seth’s visit to Russia marks a pivotal moment in India-Russia defence ties, with discussions centred on spare parts, air defence systems, BMP-3 infantry vehicles, and future battle tanks, The Print reported.

The trip is the first by an Indian Army chief in six years and comes amid Moscow’s push for deeper collaboration in joint production and technology transfer.

Gen Dhiraj Seth will meet Russian Army Chief Colonel General Andrei Mordvichev and other senior military officials. His agenda includes upgradation of Russian-origin weapons systems, securing spare parts and supplies, and evaluating new platforms being offered by Moscow.

This visit is strategically significant as nearly the entire Armoured Corps and Mechanised Infantry of the Indian Army are built around Russian-origin systems.

The availability of spare parts for Russian-origin equipment remains a pressing issue. From assault rifles and armoured personnel carriers to tanks, rocket launchers, and air defence systems, Russian-origin platforms are deeply embedded in the Indian Army. Ensuring sustained supply chains is critical for operational readiness.

Russia has offered several new systems to India. Among them is the Pantsir-S1M, an upgraded short-range mobile air defence system. The Indian Army is already pursuing the Carrier Air Defence Tracked (CADET) program, with at least 50 percent indigenous content, to protect mechanised columns across varied terrains up to 5,000 metres altitude.

The Pantsir system, combining surface-to-air missiles with twin 30-mm cannons, is designed to defend critical assets against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and precision-guided weapons.

India had previously considered the Pantsir in 2013 but opted for South Korea’s Hybrid Biho, though the deal collapsed over indigenous content requirements.

Another major Russian proposal is the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle. India has thousands of BMP-2s built under licence, forming the backbone of its Mechanised Infantry. While the Army is pursuing an indigenous program to modernise the BMP-2 fleet, Russia’s BMP-3 offer coincides with India’s Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) project, raising questions about whether India will opt for indigenous modernisation or consider Russian alternatives.

Russia is also pushing proposals for a new-generation main battle tank. India’s Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) program aims to replace ageing T-72 and T-90 fleets. Moscow could offer its advanced T-14 Armata or propose joint development tailored to India’s requirements. This aligns with Russia’s broader pitch to move beyond a buyer-seller model towards joint production and technology transfer, as seen in the BrahMos missile program.

India continues to sustain Russian-origin systems. In March, it signed a ₹445 crore contract for upgrades to Tunguska air defence missile systems. This reflects India’s pragmatic approach of balancing indigenous development with Russian support to maintain operational capability.

The visit also comes against the backdrop of President Vladimir Putin’s confirmed participation in the BRICS Summit in New Delhi from 12–13 September 2026.

Russia has been actively pushing defence proposals, including additional S-400 systems, Su-57 joint production, and submarine technologies. Moscow is keen to expand partnerships with Indian private defence companies, moving beyond traditional state-run collaborations.

This visit by Gen Seth is expected to reinforce India-Russia defence cooperation, particularly in land-force modernisation, while also testing the balance between indigenous programs and Russian offers.

Government Officially Designates Indigenous Kaveri Dry Engine To Power India’s UCAVs


India’s indigenous Kaveri Dry Engine has now been firmly designated as the power plant for the country’s Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs), with manufacturing underway through Indian Industry Partners.

This marks a decisive step towards aerospace self‑reliance, as the engine moves into advanced testing and certification phases.

The Kaveri Dry Engine is a non‑afterburning aero engine specifically optimised for UCAV applications. It incorporates an indigenously designed high‑inlet‑distortion‑tolerant fan, a fuel‑control system, an autonomous engine‑control system, and a short jet pipe. These features are crucial for stealth operations, reducing infrared signatures and ensuring reliable thrust control during combat missions.

The Ministry of Defence Annual Report 2025–26 confirmed that the First Engine to Test was integrated in July 2025. Performance and operability testing in the uninstalled condition has been successfully completed. The engine is now undergoing a rebuild for installed‑condition demonstrations, including the staircase test, which validates thrust response across incremental power settings.

Manufacturing of engine modules through Indian Industry Partners is progressing steadily. Companies such as Godrej & Boyce are engaged in precision assembly, marking a shift from purely state‑run research to industrial‑scale production. This collaboration accelerates timelines for certification tests and strengthens India’s defence‑industrial base.

The Gas Turbine Research Establishment has introduced advanced compressors, turbine blades, and stealth‑oriented coatings into the derivative design. The Dry Kaveri variant delivers around 49–52 kN thrust, tailored for unmanned combat aerial vehicles such as the Ghatak UCAV.

Trials have included unrestricted throttle capability tests and Accelerated Simulated Endurance Mission Tests, replicating loiter‑strike‑loiter cycles, rapid throttle changes, and thermal cycling. These validated durability, fuel efficiency, and stealth performance.

By late 2025, the first production‑standard Dry Kaveri (D1) was handed over for baseline validation. Subsequent variants have undergone 150‑hour endurance and altitude trials. Over 140 hours of cumulative testing have been completed, including 70 hours of ground runs in Bangalore and 75 hours of airborne trials in Russia. Certification is targeted for 2026, subject to Cabinet Committee on Security clearance for the Ghatak UCAV.

The Ghatak UCAV, powered by the Kaveri Dry Engine, is expected to cruise near Mach 0.9, operate at altitudes up to 40,000 feet, and carry precision‑guided munitions over ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometres. Its endurance of about two hours on internal fuel makes it suitable for deep‑penetration missions. The absence of an afterburner reduces weight and infrared visibility, enhancing survivability in contested airspace.

The National Aero Engine Test Complex in Karnataka is being readied to support indigenous validation. This facility will reduce reliance on foreign centres and allow parallel endurance trials.

The experience gained from the Kaveri program has strengthened India’s expertise in engine integration, endurance testing, and material science, paving the way for future indigenous fighter engines such as Kaveri 2.0 and propulsion systems for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.

India’s indigenous combat‑drone engine journey is therefore entering a crucial phase. The combination of domestic innovation, private‑sector partnerships, and international testing collaborations underscores a turning point in India’s aerospace self‑reliance.

India’s Nuclear Surge: ROSATOM Offers Full-Spectrum Reactor Deal — From Gigawatts, Minerals To SMRs


Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy major ROSATOM has announced a significant expansion of India-Russia nuclear cooperation during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, MoneyControl reported.

The initiative includes advanced large-capacity nuclear reactors, small modular reactors, collaboration in critical minerals, and localisation of high-end manufacturing technologies.

This marks a deepening of the strategic relationship between the two countries, placing nuclear energy and India’s energy security at the centre of future industrial cooperation.

The announcement followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on 11 September in New Delhi.

The leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in energy, discussed expanding industrial collaboration, and reiterated the ambitious target of achieving ₹8,33,000 crores in bilateral trade by 2030. This underscores the growing importance of India-Russia economic and energy security cooperation.

Kirill Komarov, First Deputy Director General for Corporate Development and International Business at ROSATOM, highlighted India’s ambitious goal of increasing installed nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047.


He emphasised that ROSATOM is already contributing to India’s nuclear program as the only foreign company constructing a nuclear power plant in the country. He confirmed ROSATOM’s readiness to provide India with a broad portfolio of modern nuclear technologies, ranging from large-capacity nuclear power units to advanced small modular reactors.

This reflects Russia’s intention to strengthen the nuclear partnership beyond existing projects while supporting India’s energy security through diversified nuclear energy solutions.

ROSATOM is currently constructing the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu. Two reactors are already operational, while four additional units are under various stages of implementation. 

Kudankulam Units 1 and 2, based on Russian VVER-1000 reactor technology, were connected to India’s national power grid in 2013 and 2016, respectively. These units have become a vital pillar of India’s nuclear energy generation.

According to ROSATOM, the two operational units had generated more than 132 billion kWh of electricity since entering commercial operation as of April 2026. Units 3, 4, 5 and 6, also based on VVER-1000 technology, represent the second and third phases of the Kudankulam project, further consolidating India-Russia cooperation in nuclear energy and India’s long-term energy security.

Beyond nuclear reactors and SMRs, ROSATOM is seeking to expand cooperation in critical minerals and advanced industrial materials. Its metallurgy businesses have identified titanium, zirconium, hafnium and calcium as important areas for collaboration.

ROSATOM MetalTech is exploring cooperation in rare-earth magnets, consolidated demand for rare-earth products, and investments in new production capacities within India. A milestone has already been achieved through ROSATOM’s Giredmet Institute and Indian company Alt Metals, which signed a contract to develop a pilot titanium sponge production facility.

This project combines Russian technological expertise with Indian industrial capabilities in strategic materials essential for advanced manufacturing and energy security.

ROSATOM is also advancing localisation of sophisticated manufacturing technologies under the broader Make in India initiative. Its additive technologies business is working with Indian partners to establish a complete ecosystem involving technology transfer, turnkey additive technology centres and localisation of advanced equipment manufacturing. This creates new opportunities for India-Russia industrial cooperation.

The company announced that local production of Russian-developed 3D scanners began in India this year, reducing equipment costs for Indian customers by 40 per cent. These locally manufactured products could qualify for local product status under the Make in India initiative, reinforcing India’s manufacturing ecosystem while expanding access to advanced Russian technology.

With nuclear energy, SMRs, VVER reactors, critical minerals, rare-earth materials and additive manufacturing forming the core of the new engagement, the India-Russia partnership emerging from BRICS 2026 signals a broader effort to transform longstanding strategic cooperation into deeper technological and industrial collaboration. India’s energy security and nuclear future remain central to this shared vision.

India’s Homegrown Missile Shield Challenges Russia’s S-500 Pitch


India’s indigenous missile shield has now reached a stage where it can counter ICBM-class threats, hypersonic weapons, and MIRV-equipped missiles, raising serious questions about whether Russia’s S-500 is still necessary.

The DRDO’s Phase-II trials of AD-1 and AD-2 interceptors, combined with Project Kusha’s maturing capabilities, suggest India may already possess the tools to secure its skies without relying on foreign systems.

Operation Sindoor demonstrated India’s ability to defend against a wide spectrum of aerial threats. In May 2025, Indian forces intercepted a Pakistani Fatah-series missile over Sirsa, showcasing the operational readiness of its missile defence network. This event highlighted the importance of layered defence against drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

Russia has been actively pitching the S-500 Prometheus system to India. The S-500 is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at ranges up to 600 km and altitudes of 200 km. It is also reportedly capable of targeting low-Earth-orbit satellites, making it a versatile complement to the S-400 already in Indian service. Moscow argues that the S-500 would fill gaps in India’s defence architecture and provide additional insurance against evolving threats.

India’s own Ballistic Missile Defence program, however, has achieved a significant breakthrough. On 10–11 June 2026, DRDO successfully completed Phase-II trials using the AD-1 and AD-2 interceptors. 

These trials extended India’s coverage envelope from 2,000 km to 5,000 km, placing the country among the select group of nations capable of countering intercontinental ballistic missiles. The system is also designed to neutralise hypersonic weapons and missiles equipped with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles.

Mobility is a key feature of India’s shield. Indigenous 12x12 transporter-erector-launchers built by Ashok Leyland provide rapid deployment capability, ensuring the system can be repositioned to respond to dynamic threats. This mobility enhances survivability and operational flexibility, critical in modern warfare.

Project Kusha represents the next stage of India’s indigenous missile defence evolution. As it matures, India is poised to field a fully homegrown shield capable of addressing both regional and strategic threats.

The progress of Project Kusha raises the question of whether India should continue to invest in foreign systems like the S-500, or instead channel resources into strengthening its indigenous capabilities.

The debate is strategic as much as technical. While the S-500 offers proven Russian technology and potential interoperability with existing S-400 units, India’s indigenous systems promise self-reliance, cost efficiency, and reduced dependence on external suppliers. With geopolitical uncertainties and the push for Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence, the calculus increasingly favours indigenous solutions.

Ultimately, India must weigh whether the S-500 fills a genuine capability gap or risks duplicating systems already approaching maturity. The decision will shape India’s defence posture for decades, determining whether it continues to rely on foreign technology or fully embraces its own missile shield.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink revealed the existence of these “space control weapons” during the Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbour, Maryland.

He stated that the systems are capable of defending American forces against hostile adversary action in space, though he declined to provide details about the type of weapons, their deployment date, or their specific capabilities. This marks a significant disclosure of US military space capabilities that had previously not been described in such direct terms.

A spokesperson for the US Space Force separately confirmed the existence of these orbital weapons but offered no information about their design or deployment.

The Space Force described space control as involving both kinetic and non-kinetic means to contest and control activities in the space domain. 

These capabilities, according to the service, can be employed for both offensive and defensive purposes. The acknowledgement underscores Washington’s intent to strengthen its ability to operate in an increasingly contested space environment.

The deployment of military capabilities in space is not unprecedented. The US and Soviet Union began exploring military uses of space soon after Sputnik was launched in 1957. One of the principal concerns during the early space race was the possibility of nuclear weapons being placed in orbit.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty subsequently prohibited countries from placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit around Earth. However, the treaty did not ban all forms of military activity in space.

Governments have continued to develop technologies to protect satellites, disrupt opposing systems, and interfere with space-based military capabilities. The US, Russia, China, and India have all pursued various space and counterspace systems designed to affect satellites and other orbital assets.

Washington views China and Russia as its primary rivals in the space domain. The US Space Force has assessed that China develops and operates space and counterspace capabilities as part of its broader military modernisation strategy.

Russia, meanwhile, is seen as considering space a warfighting domain, believing that supremacy in orbit will be decisive in future conflicts. These assessments form part of the US effort to prepare for challenges posed by adversaries in space.

The US Space Force itself was established in 2019 by President Donald Trump as part of the Department of the Air Force.

Its mission is to organise and conduct military operations in space, focusing on protecting US and allied space-based systems while developing capabilities to respond to threats against satellites and other assets that support communications, navigation, and surveillance. 

Meink’s remarks now indicate that the US considers at least some of these capabilities to include weapons physically deployed in orbit. The administration has not revealed what those weapons are, when they were launched, or how they would be used in an actual conflict, keeping the specifics classified.

This disclosure comes at a time when the global space arms race is intensifying. Nations are increasingly aware that space supremacy could determine the outcome of future wars.

The US decision to acknowledge orbital weapons signals a shift towards greater transparency, even as the details remain shrouded in secrecy. It also highlights the growing militarisation of space, where technologies once confined to science fiction are now part of defence strategies.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Calls BrahMos Cornerstone of India-Philippines Defence Partnership


The BrahMos missile system has been described by Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma Theresa P Lazaro as a key pillar of India-Philippines defence ties.

She emphasised that the missile system represents an important element of the bilateral defence relationship, though she refrained from commenting on potential additional acquisitions or cooperation, noting that such matters fall under the Philippines’ Department of National Defence.

In her remarks, Lazaro stated that BrahMos is indeed an important aspect of India’s defence relations with the Philippines. When asked about possible future acquisitions, joint exercises, logistics cooperation, or defence industrial collaboration, she clarified that these questions should be directed to the Department of National Defense, underscoring the division of responsibilities within the Philippine government.

The Philippines has emerged as a significant defence partner for India in the Indo-Pacific region. The BrahMos missile deal has become a landmark element of the two countries’ expanding strategic and defence engagement. Defence cooperation is now considered one of the strongest pillars of bilateral relations.

A major milestone was reached on 19 April 2024 when India delivered the first batch of the BrahMos missile system to the Philippines, making it the first foreign nation to acquire this advanced weapon system.

Her comments came against the backdrop of growing India-Philippines cooperation in defence and maritime security, particularly in response to evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific.

The deployment of BrahMos has been seen as enhancing Manila’s deterrence posture, while also strengthening India’s role as a reliable defence partner in Southeast Asia.

The Foreign Secretary also commended India for organising a “very successful” BRICS Summit. She highlighted South-South cooperation as a key aspect of the grouping, praising the diversity of BRICS membership and India’s efforts in steering the organisation amid differing geopolitical perspectives. 

Lazaro described South-South cooperation as a very important element of the summit and noted that the expanded BRICS grouping was laudably seeking to address a wide range of geopolitical issues.

She further commended India for initiating and successfully organising the summit, which was hosted in New Delhi last weekend.

The 18th BRICS Summit brought together leaders and representatives of the expanded grouping to discuss issues of global governance, economic cooperation, development, and priorities of the Global South. India’s leadership in hosting the summit was acknowledged as a constructive step in strengthening multilateral cooperation.

The Philippines’ recognition of BrahMos as a cornerstone of its defence ties with India reflects the broader trajectory of Indo-Philippine relations, where defence and strategic cooperation are increasingly intertwined with wider regional and global engagements.

American economist, Jeffrey Sachs has emphasised that BRICS is not an anti-US alliance but a collective push against US unilateralism, backing alternatives to the dollar due to its weaponisation.

His remarks at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi highlight the bloc’s focus on multipolarity, diplomacy, and practical local currency settlements rather than a common currency.

American economist and foreign policy expert Jeffrey Sachs stated that BRICS represents a multipolar and genuinely multilateral global order. He explained that the grouping’s stance was not directed against the United States but against unilateral actions that undermine diplomacy. He stressed that disputes should be resolved through dialogue rather than wars of aggression, citing the ongoing Gulf crisis as an example.

Sachs underlined that BRICS seeks a true multilateral system. He clarified that the bloc is not an alliance against Washington but opposes unilateralism. He argued that alternatives to the US dollar are necessary, not for technical monetary reasons, but because the dollar has been weaponised as a foreign policy tool.

He pointed to the use of the international financial system to enforce US policy. Sachs explained that when Washington instructs countries like India not to import from Russia, such demands are illegitimate and illegal.

He warned that enforcement through exclusion from the SWIFT payment system makes it essential for nations to develop mechanisms to trade outside the dollar framework.

Sachs recalled Donald Trump’s strong opposition to de-dollarisation efforts during his presidency. He noted that Trump’s statement, “Don’t you dare move away from the dollar,” revealed how deeply the US views dollar dominance as a core foreign policy interest.

The remarks come as BRICS continues discussions on reducing reliance on the dollar in trade. Member nations are promoting settlements in local currencies and exploring alternative payment mechanisms. 

The New Delhi Declaration acknowledged ongoing talks on trade settlements and investments using BRICS local currencies, while respecting national priorities and avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach.

India has clarified that there is no proposal for a common BRICS currency. Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, explained that discussions on local currency settlement have been underway for some time. He said the aim is to make bilateral trade more efficient, not to replace the global payment and settlement framework.

Dalela highlighted that local currency settlement reduces transaction costs in bilateral trade. He described it as complementary to the global system, improving overall trade efficiency. He added that the New Delhi Declaration recognised the work of the BRICS Payment Task Force on cross-border interoperability of payment and messaging channels.

The declaration encouraged continued efforts towards practical payment solutions that are fast, low-cost, accessible, efficient, transparent, and safe.

The push for local currency settlements and payment interoperability is part of broader BRICS efforts to facilitate cross-border trade. These measures aim to reduce transaction costs while keeping discussions on de-dollarisation focused on practical alternatives rather than the creation of a single common currency.

Sachs’ comments reflect the wider BRICS debate over the international financial system. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasised that India’s strategic interests are best served by considered calculation rather than knee-jerk responses as the country navigates global turbulence. 

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Indian Council of World Affairs in New Delhi, he underlined the importance of continuously assessing and optimising India’s strategy in a complex international environment.

He pointed out that two major conflicts are currently underway, one in the Gulf and the other in Ukraine, and India maintains good ties with all parties involved. This makes forging an approach particularly challenging, as balancing equities requires careful deliberation.

He noted that the global economy is witnessing the weaponisation of everything, with volatility in tariffs and increased dumping in markets, raising the question of how best to counter such trends.

Jaishankar stressed that India’s growing interests, wider exposure and expanding partnerships demand sustained effort to respond effectively to rapid changes. He explained that India, with greater interests and more partners, must constantly apply and reapply itself to this dynamic environment. Often, he said, the answers lie in optimising strategy and responses rather than reacting impulsively.

He assessed India’s approach to current turbulence through outcomes such as energy security, exports, supply chains and the safety of the Indian community abroad. On energy security, he highlighted diversification as a key factor in keeping supplies steady and costs manageable.

He added that new partners, markets and routings have protected and even expanded exports. Supply chains, he said, have benefited from nimble solutions, while the Indian community abroad has been secured in large measure due to sound policy choices.

Jaishankar reiterated that strategic interests are better served by considered calculation than by knee-jerk responses. He argued that each of these outcomes demonstrates the importance of continuous debate and dialogue in shaping India’s responses to global uncertainties.

He also underlined the need for India’s intellectual engagement with international affairs to keep pace with its expanding global role. India today engages with a much wider range of countries and regions, and its interests have become increasingly global.

Responsibilities have grown, and expectations of India have risen correspondingly. He noted that India is articulating its perspectives on global challenges with greater confidence, including those concerning the Global South.

Jaishankar added that as India’s global role grows, its intellectual engagement must evolve. Much of the established discourse on international relations has been shaped by concepts and experiences developed elsewhere, but a rising India must increasingly bring its own history, experience, interests, concepts and terminology to the way it approaches the world.

He concluded by stressing that the complexity of India’s external environment, marked by conflicts in the Gulf and Ukraine, uncertainty over tariffs, dumping in markets and the wider weaponisation of economic instruments, makes continuous debate and dialogue indispensable for shaping effective responses.

Abbas Araghchi To Visit China Ahead of Xi-Trump Talks


Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi will travel to China on 16 September for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to a statement released by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The announcement was made on X, confirming that Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, will meet Araghchi in Beijing.

The timing of the visit is significant as it precedes Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected trip to the United States on 24 September, where he is scheduled to hold discussions with US President Donald Trump.

The White House confirmed the date after Trump mentioned it during a meeting with executives from the US travel sector, expressing optimism about the forthcoming engagement. Trump said, “By the way, we have the president of China coming on the 24th; it’ll be very exciting and be great, and I’d love to have him.”

Araghchi’s visit comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, where Iran remains locked in a military confrontation with the United States. Tehran has been actively pursuing diplomatic engagement with key partners to mitigate instability and reinforce its regional position.

The Iranian Foreign Minister and Wang Yi had previously met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kyrgyzstan in July. They also held a pull-aside meeting during the BRICS Summit, underscoring the continuity of their diplomatic exchanges.

Araghchi’s latest trip follows Iran’s participation in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where President Masoud Pezeshkian led the delegation. In his address, Pezeshkian urged member countries to adopt practical measures against unilateral and inhumane sanctions. He emphasised that BRICS must play a stronger role in addressing global conflicts and safeguarding international peace.

Pezeshkian highlighted the importance of protecting civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities, warning that any attacks on such sites pose a direct threat to global security. He also stressed that the Palestinian issue remains a critical test of global governance, calling on BRICS to actively support the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The summit concluded with the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026. The document called for reforms in global governance, greater representation for developing countries, and expressed concern over escalating tensions in West Asia.

It urged maximum restraint, protection of civilians, respect for sovereignty, and the safeguarding of civilian infrastructure. The declaration also underscored the need to maintain the smooth flow of global trade, supply chains, and energy in line with international law.

On the sidelines of the summit, President Pezeshkian met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional developments, with Modi emphasising the importance of lasting peace and stability in West Asia.

He also highlighted the need to ensure freedom of navigation, uninterrupted commerce, and the safety of seafarers, particularly given the tensions affecting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Against this backdrop, Araghchi’s talks with Wang Yi are expected to provide an opportunity for Beijing and Tehran to exchange views on regional developments and broader international issues.

The minister highlighted Bangladesh’s current role as the rotating chair of BIMSTEC, confirming that Dhaka intends to host a BIMSTEC Summit in 2027. In a pointed comment, he said, “Breakfast in India, lunch in India, dinner in India -- then when will you eat your own food?” His statement reflects Dhaka’s determination to assert its independent foreign policy identity while still valuing strong ties with New Delhi.

Kobir’s comments followed recent developments surrounding international summits. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman did not attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, as his invitation was extended in his capacity as BIMSTEC Chair rather than through a bilateral mechanism. IAF Launches Dronathon-2026 To Showcase Indigenous Unmanned Systems And Vayu UTtaM At Pokhran


Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Vice Chief of the Air Staff, inaugurated the first Indian Air Force Dronathon-2026 at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer, announced PIB.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, HQ IDS, and representatives of the Indian Army and BSF. The initiative marks a significant step by the IAF to engage directly with India’s unmanned systems industry and assess emerging technologies under realistic operational conditions.

The three-day event, scheduled from 14 to 16 September 2026, has brought together more than 20 leading defence companies, Start-Ups, MSMEs, DPSUs, and innovators from India’s rapidly evolving unmanned systems ecosystem.


The Indian Air Force views unmanned systems as a vital complement to manned aviation, providing commanders with enhanced reach, persistence, responsiveness, and flexibility in air operations.

During Dronathon-2026, participating companies and innovators are demonstrating their Unmanned Aircraft Systems and associated technologies at the Pokhran range. The demonstrations cover a wide spectrum of operational capabilities, including surveillance and reconnaissance, autonomous operations, swarm technologies, electronic warfare, and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

The central focus is to move beyond technology demonstration towards achieving operational effect. Systems are being assessed for reliability, effectiveness in contested environments, and adaptability to evolving operational requirements and emerging threats.

On the opening day, the Vice Chief of the Air Staff also released the ‘IAF UAS Roadmap’. This roadmap provides clarity to Indian industry on capability priorities and is intended to facilitate focused innovation. It will enable the unmanned airborne systems industry, academia, and research organisations to align their efforts with the future requirements of the IAF.

A major highlight was the successful demonstration of “Vayu UTtaM,” the indigenously developed multi-mode Unmanned Traffic Management system. In real-time trials at Pokhran, it detected and tracked both military and civil UAS.

This capability is designed to facilitate coordinated management of UAS operations in increasingly congested airspace, while also supporting identification and timely mitigation of unauthorised or rogue drones.

With the proliferation of unmanned systems, Vayu UTtaM has potential applications beyond the military domain, including airspace safety, civil aviation, critical infrastructure protection, and public safety.

Dronathon-2026 reinforces the Indian Air Force’s commitment to Atmanirbharta in unmanned systems. The focus extends beyond airframes to the complete ecosystem, encompassing propulsion, sensors and payloads, communications, autonomy, electronic warfare, countermeasures, and airspace management. 

The initiative highlights the IAF’s determination to integrate indigenous innovation into its operational framework, ensuring preparedness for future challenges.

Pakistani Military Aircraft Reportedly Conduct Airstrikes In Kalat Balochistan


Pakistani military aircraft reportedly conducted airstrikes at two locations in Kalat on Monday, a day after a drone targeted a vehicle in Manguchar.

According to The Balochistan Post, helicopter shelling and quadcopter attacks were also reported from several parts of the district.

A jet aircraft reportedly carried out an airstrike in the Chappar area of Kalat. A powerful blast was heard in the area, though there was no immediate information about casualties or the extent of damage. Another explosion was reported near Took and Dasht-e-Goran. While the exact location of the blast could not be confirmed, jet aircraft were reportedly seen flying over the area around the time of the explosion.

On Sunday, a drone reportedly targeted a vehicle in Manguchar. Details regarding possible casualties or damage were not immediately available.

Separately, gunship helicopters allegedly shelled Rudeenjo and nearby areas for several hours on Sunday. Quadcopter attacks were also reported from the region. Communication disruptions and movement restrictions in the affected areas have made it difficult to independently verify the reports or obtain comprehensive information about possible casualties and damage.

The reported attacks come amid a series of military operations and aerial strikes across Balochistan in recent weeks. Several incidents have led to allegations of civilian casualties.

On September 10, four civilians were reportedly killed and several others injured after Frontier Corps personnel allegedly opened fire on a wedding gathering in Wadh, Khuzdar. Seven-year-old Shahzaib was among those injured.

Earlier, on August 21, four orchard workers were reportedly killed and three others wounded in a suspected drone strike in the Gaith area of Khadkocha, Mastung.

On August 12, more than 20 people, including women and children, were reportedly killed or injured in Gidar Goandhan, Surab, following what was described as a Pakistani airstrike on residential areas.

Pakistan’s military rejected that account, stating that militants preparing a vehicle-borne explosive device were killed when it detonated prematurely. The military further said that subsequent explosions resulted in civilian casualties.

However, residents and rights groups have rejected the military’s version of events and maintained that the casualties were caused by an airstrike.
